Cool Well there a first time for everything...

today while merging on to the QE#2 at Olds while shifting from 3rd to 4th the shifter broke clean of at the short shift adapter (read bad engineering). So there I am in coasting in neutral with the shifter in my hand a semi up my *** with a dumb look on my face... 1/2hr later with the tire iron jammed on to the remainder of the shift linkage I limp down the highway to turn around I only had 3 and 4th thankfully the DD is in because there was some slipping going on trying to get going in 3rd....

I have broke alot of stuff but this was new

Not the first time I have heard of a breakage problem. It's a known failure point.

With all my dealings trying to warranty anything BD, good luck.

Unfortantely my warranty deptment died a few years ago, Albert always stood behind what he sold at least with me but I have tried before as well with BD today I phoned them and got the warranty is one year on parts BS.

I am going to have it welded at a local machinist shop being it is a machined part and probably a carbon steel or cast so my welding skills are up not up on the high tech skills.

At least I was 5 min from home

Kevin at DPS "re-engineered" the BD unit and as far as I know, there have been no failures of his part.

It's been awhile since I have looked at mine but if I remember correctly, the lower bend of the BD unit has a kink in it and that is a stress point. Kevin's unit has been drilled and had a pin driven in and welded at this point and it stopped the failures. Like I mentioned, it's been awhile since I looked at mine and I am going by memory but you can see a small pin that has been installed into the lower shift lever of the DPS part.

Sad thing is, BD knew/knows about this failure but never did anything about it until they "re-engineered" the new version. Anyone with an old version is on his own, the way BD works with all of their warranty issues.

I think I will take mine down to the machinst and he can lay a nice big warm bead of weld into the weak area as it won't effect anything. For know I will go back to bashing my knuckles on the dash in stock form.

Took the shifter down to the machinist today and he figures he can fix it no problem. The interesting thing is I have a reply on my post on the BD forum that they will replace it. I'll keep you in the loop on this one, I really hope they own up to a bad design, as it could have been a ugly situation if the ditches where still fulll of snow and that wasn't a option to drive into it to avoid being rear ended.

Good to hear BD stood behind their product since I too have a BD short shifter on my truck.

I too have heard of these breaking, but only the 1st design, black carbon steel model.

My understanding is that the new design that has been around for several years does not break.
The new design has a shiny looking, tool steel stub. And the spacer plate is now blue annodized.

Greenworks, which design was yours?
