I've got a 03 TDI. Fun cars to mod. I'd go with a Garret 17/22 Hybrid. Bullet proof turbo. Do the EGR delete, install a race pipe, straight exhaust, Bosio PP764's, Get a remap done on the ECU thru Rocketchip or a tuning box from KermaTDI. If you have an auto your pretty much SOL. They don't hold up to the HP or Torque. If your Golf is a 5spd then your in luck. Sachs VR6 Clutch kit or SBC Stage 2. I also run a lightweight 11lb flywheel. I can light my tires up 1st and 2nd. Lost roughly 10 mpg. Stock I was 50mpg. Now 40-42mpg with a heavy foot. VR6 will handle up to 300ft/lbs torque. SBC >330ft/lbs. Lots of mods you can do that are cheap. Read up on TDIclub.com.
Parts I get from:
IDparts.com for the 17/22 hybrid garett, sticks
Kermatdi.com for the qloader.
Dieselgeek.com for the skid plate, bypass oil filter, deluxe timing belt kits, race pipe and egr delete.

Yeah that little 4cyl 1.9L is amazing the hp and torque you can get out of it. Mine pulls like a freight train in the mountain passes. Set cruise at 80mph and doesn't drop a mph.

Maintenance and getting the timing belt jobs done correctly is key.

Kenny, have you sold you're truck yet? I know of a couple guys that are looking for a decent diesel long bed truck. Would you sell it with a broken transmission? PM a price.

Helenatdi do I need any kind of programming to install a Egr delete and race pipe or is that a pd motor thing.

Mike The truck is not sold yet I have a couple parts to pull including the clutch so I will look at the tranny then but I will let you know when its ready to go.

Kenny contact my buddy Mark Malone, he owns http://malonetuning.com/ He will get you setup. I am running sticks and a clutch saver (cuts down low end tq to keep it from slipping) tune on my wagon, and I love it.

Tows my 2 dirt bikes, all my gear, two dogs, up over the rogers pass, at "the posted speed limit " and still gets great economy.

I have been friends with Mark for 10yrs now, he was even at my wedding, let him know I sent you and he will probably even give you a bit of a deal.

Just read your EGR question; you can do an egr delete (but it will throw a CEL until you have a tune), with a race pipe, I keep meaning to do mine, but the software has it turned off. Now it is just a cosmetics thing.

Kenny
Your going to want to pull your intake off as well and clean it when doing the egr delete and race pipe. You'll never have another clogged intake again. Jim at Dieselgeek.com has everything you need for that. As dvst8r mentioned tuning will take care of your cel. In the tdi world Jeff @ Rocketchip tuning is the best. I personally like KermaTDI as they have a qloader box. Tunes can be sent by internet and downloaded to the ECU. I collect all my data using a VAGCOM so the tuner can dial things in.

I dont mean to change Kenny's subject but Ive been wanting a tdi for awhile and the recent jump in fuel prices has resparked my interest.

Ive been hesitant to buy one because 1) its "german" and 2) I want to be able to do my own work etc.

So, my questions are:

1) How hard is it to remove and clean out the intake?

2) How hard is it to change the timing belt (yes, I know you need the special tools)??,

3) How hard is it to put an Espar on (I assume the engine compartment is a little cramped)??

4) Any other wisdom/advice you guys can impart?

(oh, and I was looking at 01-03 manual trannys)....Thx.

My biz partner got one a while ago to buzz around with.. The used market is not cheap for these things. From what I read from his research, the EGR thing is 1st to take care of. The VW shop he visits in Edm has intake manifolds on the shelf ready to R&R when you come in. Easier to remove and take time to dunk it to clean.

German cars are not an hard to work on then american cars, also they have alot of great tools out there for diagnostics like the Vag Com, by Ross Tech, I have yet to see anything like it(I own one). I have owned many Vw/audis and worked on even more, I really like them and find them simple to work on. Also the support in the form of forum is huge. Parts can be alittle spendy but if you know where to shop its not to bad. Don't be scared.

Yep, I have to agree. I'm on my second VW now, and am really becoming a German car enthusiast. Wanted a small decent car that's reliable and fun to drive. Nothing made here really caught my eye, and I'm not really a Japanese car guy. German cars are put together different than most other stuff, and their wiring diagrams are really hard to figure out, but it's just a matter of getting used to. VW sure makes comfy seats too.

Shane, they are easy to work on.. We changed the injectors and turbo in about 4 hours. And the only reason it took that long is that he put an aftermarket turbo on it. So there was a little retrofitting.

Kenny,, definately clean out the intake,, when we did my buddies car, the intake was down to about the size of a pencil inside from all the crap from the egr. Lots of brake clean fixed it right up
