Any of you guys have expierance with registering a trailer with no serial number. I have the opertunity to buy a 24foot goose neck with two 7000lb axles. The trailer itself was built a few years ago by a friend, but was never registered because it was only used on the farm. It is built as good if not better then anything availilbe commercially.
I figure this way I have a trailer to tow what ever I have around.

 

I made one several years ago(early 90's) and they had me make one up for a serial # and put it on the trailer.Don't know if the rules have change now.I used my parents old phone # so i would remember----just a thought.The registration said custom/privately made.DW

 

Same here. If its home made, just make one up. I weld beaded mine on.

 

To register a trailer you need a bill of sale and a serial number or a bill of sale and the pink slip from the previous registration. If you don't have a serial number because the trailer is home made and never registered you can get one created it only costs $50 for a trailer. Because of all the trailer theft in Alberta they have gone this way to try to cut down on it.

 

I went thru this about 5 years ago. Its a pain.

$50 is for a trailer that is under 3500# GVW.

Over that its over $500, you apply for it then a guy comes to your house to inspect it to make sure its not made of stolen parts(not a safety inspection at all), then registries issues you a serial number.

Or, make up a serial number, attach it to the trailer. Go into registries and try to register it. When it doesn't some up in the system tell that you bought it from a guy that said he brought it up from the US many years ago and never registered it. If you are lucky, polite and patient the clerk will get frustrated trying to find it in the system and make a new file for it and give you your registration. If you are unlucky they'll make you go thru the process of getting a new vin assigned.

 

I didn't know about the weight restriction, thanks for the heads up. I am just about to make a single axle 7000lb trailer. After looking that up it's $418.70 for anything other than a home made trailer less than 3500lbs. I think I'll limit the trailer to less than 3500lbs. You just saved me $368.70 thanks..
