Thinking out loud

Hey guys!

I might have a chance to get an 06 2500 quad cab 4x4 for dirt dirt cheap.

Just out of curiousity, what drive train parts will fit an 02? I know the axles are American Axle but will they bolt in? How much hassle is it to stuff the Common Rail in? Questions questions I know.

I know the body is not interchangeable, I'm just going to part that out.

I haven't had a chance to take a real good look at it, but it's all there, runs, not sure on drives (trans problem), it's loaded with power windows, locks, air, etc. Apparently only has 126,000 km's on it.

Or am I better off to just part it out and make a couple of bucks if I can get it cheap enough.

I'm hoping to get a better look at it in a few days here so I can make a decision on whether to buy it or not.

Thanks, Jeff

Not sure if the front axle bolts in. From what I understand, the AAM 975 isn't a step up over a D60. The brakes will bolt on to your Dana though, so you can use that to upgrade.

There was a guy on here many moons ago that blew up his 24v and put a CR in. The only physical modification was notching the engine crossmember for the ECM to fit. Why it couldn't be relocated, I am not sure. I think the rest would just be making all the electronics happy.

A CR in a 2nd gen would be pretty cool, be the quietest 2nd gen around these parts.

Here the wiring harness to get the engine to run. You have a 6 speed, I was gonna do an 4.5 engine into mine last year. My auto still needs the APPS sensor. Still do able, do some electronic stuff. You truck being a stick truck, it should be pretty easy for the most part. The next part is getting the guages to work, still pretty easy stuff.

I don't know jack about the 3rd Gen stuff, have always had my nose in the 2nd Gens so that's why the questions. I'm more looking at the mechanical end of it all, the body won't do me any good other than the power/heat tow mirrors so I'm going to part it out to anyone that can use some or all of it.

I'm happy with the Dana 60/80 combo I have and will do the brake upgrade for sure. I've followed the front thread for awhile now and am curious about the rears. I guess if I do pick this truck up, I can do a comparison right there side by side.

I figured the CR motor would fit, it is the same basic motor just need to get it to talk to the rest of the truck and that shouldn't be a huge problem. As Tate mentioned, a CR in a 2nd Gen would be cool but I am partial to the noise of the 24v.

The 3rd Gen is an auto and I would love to go that route for something different but as Mike said, being a stick truck would be easier. I can see opening up a can of worms to swap a 3rd Gen auto package in let alone one out of a 2nd Gen.

Wink, the truck is a short box quad cab, What are you thinking about?

I'm trying to get there in the next day or so to see it so I'll have a better idea as to what I'm dealing with.

It would be easy to get the auto to work with that... you would have everything you need from the donor truck. The only thing that you would have to modify is the shifter, not a biggie. Once you start to drive a cr, you wont go back, so drivable, easy to tune. I love them, and would be glad to help you out on any technical info I can

How close is the wiring harness between trucks? I just wonder is it worth it to put in the newer auto. Then you pretty much have to grab the entire wiring harness and I don't know about the rest of the truck (dash, steering wheel, PCM). I wanted to do the conversion a few years ago, its a big job with an auto. You would have to have both truck sitting beside each other to see the differences.

Stick is an easy conversion. The painless wiring harness will get the engine to start with the stick plus an CR ECM. I think on an auto truck the PCM and ECM have to communicate with each other to work right. It difficult when they are from different years and VIN numbers. The older auto stuff didn't care as much of it was all mechanical, but I could be wrong.

Homestead, once your done, you'll be the goto guy, with all the answers.
