Interesting point. Do we have to pay GST on used goods at the border?
Thinking back, I've only brought 1 used item back through the Sweetgrass border. I just added that value to my total, paid GST on it & never even thought about it.

As I stated earlier, I have never been questioned nor scrutinized on my receipts or anything like that. I have never volunteered the fact I was bringing goods back for a friend.
But that info was clearly on my paperwork if the guy went closely through it.

Tate is correct. Officially you have to pay duty on anything made outside the U.S., Canada or Mexico. For example, those Chinese aftermarket wheels.
The duty is 4-6% depending on which country of origin.

My very 1st trip to Sweetgrass I had some off shore RV stuff & Nokian winter tires made in Finland. I volunteered all that information & had to pay duty on it, plus GST.

For all my subsequent trips, I just state, "All automotive goods from the US for personal use" which is true. That's all the info I volunteer & I have never got questioned nor paid duties since.
I would never lie to those guys but I volunteer the least amount of information possible.

What do you pay on tires when you bring them across, just tax and duties if applicable or do you pay all the tire levies etc?

I looked at my tax invoice after my last post. My tax was 5%, just the GST. Not sure if that typical.

Hmmm....unless things are going up in the US or the Canadian vendors are finally getting it...

Decided to price out some Toyo HT tires for my truck..And also a US price...There was only a $153 saving getting the tires from the US (to sweetgrass post office)...That $153 savings doesn't include the mounting and balancing that is included free here plus not counting the dayoff work, cost of fuel and the 6 hour round trip drive..

Makes sense to buy them here-----but just in case you need to go down in the future,Montana Outlet is open one Saturday until noon or 1:00 once a month---make an early trip. (I THINK-CHECK THE WEBSITE FIRST)----looks like i won't be heading down any time soon as i have other commitments to do/spend money on this summer before truck parts as per the MRS..DW
