There are all kinds of electronics help for them too...

Dr, I wouldnt be scared of one in those years... a friend of mine has one, he bought it with 200k on it , and then started to hot rod it,, no problems, fun little car
I said be careful not afraid
Most of the service people and sales men would tell people they could drive it like a gasser and and yes for a while you could but, the turbos would slowly coke up and you would have problems. Then because the VW service and labor (SPENDY) was a nightmare The motors got a bad rap
Best part of this is you can still get some sweet deals on a car that has these problems and fix it quite easy and yes they did have some wiring issuses even the one I was just in had issues

Definately. Our shop here does probably one intake manifold cleaning a week. We also clean the turbos very often. People do have to learn that they are different than a gasser. I am not at all saying that they are not a good, they are a great motor. I was pushing them way past what they were designed to do and that is why they broke.

LOL, I like that one and I don't even own a jetta. Did you try out the diesel tech quiz? Last time I tried it there was same kinda error and I didn't get to see what the correct answers were . Now I don't have the heart to try again....

Vortex has more misinformation then it has information, and TDIclub pretty much only has info about TDI's.

The stock injectors in an IDI are good for 200hp + Dave @ Passenger and I made 200whp on a 1.6idi with a well ported 1.9idi head. A Giles worked over ip, Daves own custom intake manifold, and a bunch of other stuff.

http://www.automotive.passengerindus.../Passenger.wmv He was running a big single in that video, and the injection pump ran out of fuel. He was also turning 6000rpm +

I have made 137whp using all stock stuff, other then the clutch, the intercooler and the water injection.
