Clayh, curious how did you pay for a 03 SO piston? I priced out 6.7L piston for my 10 truck, cummins locally wanted $240 for a piston/sleeve/pin/rings. Was thinking about trying a VP SO piston for my 03 engine as the injector nozzles for both engines look very similar, the bowl is only slightly different. I can get a VP piston/pin/rings for $140.
Maybe thats the reason for the price difference?

The piston bowl is night/day different between a 24VP SO truck vs HO 305 CR. Most of the stuff that done to the piston bowl is for noise suppression. The injector is in the same position and I bet that the spray angle is similar. Just VP engines seem to take the abuse better than a CR engine. I have nothing to lose. I do have a few spare 305 engines. Been curious on seeing the difference.

The piston bowl is also a slight change in compression ratio between the SO and HO engine models.

Can you guys answer a couple quick questions about this engine swap?

1. Does the CP3 need to be timed? I don't see any marks on the gear.

2. I found torque specs for the intake and exhaust manifolds, but I can't seem to find injector torque.

Any other surprises when changing out the long block? I am a HD mechanic, but this is the first Duramax I ever wrenched on.

$240 sounds about right. I spent $650 in total for a top end gasket kit(head gasket, exhaust, valve covers, etc), oil pan gasket, and loaded piston(piston with rings only). Oh yeah and a Cummins ball cap.

As far as I can tell a CR SO piston and injectors are the same as CR HO. Don't know about the differences on a VP/CR.

I think the only reason the CRs don't stand up as well is due to the stupid valve seats that keep dropping out when you get them hot.
