o-ring cutting in calgary ?
If I had my garage by now, I would be buying that tool. I think a lot of places use a fly cutter on a mill to do the o-ring grooves. This would be a lot more accurate and less risk of fubaring something.
I think that CT out sources the orings stuff. I'm sure you'll get a half dozen or so heads this year. The trick is start to get your shop name out there for some of the performance diesel work. There really isn't a lot of choice here in Calgary for the diesel stuff.
lol, I'm not implying that you do it for free for us. just saying that if its someone that doesnt know you or whats involved they'd probably be happy to pay a grand for machining plus labour of pulling the head.
What's the going price for just the machine work ( ie you bring the head to a shop)
I was thought about buying one a few years back, when a few of us had the orings done in Nisku (I forgot the name of the place). With that tool you can do some research on which wire diameters work better, oring placement and the protrusion depth. I still don't know why everyone uses 39 to 41 thou stainless wire, but it seems to be the standard. I rather have the oring bite into the front side(closest to the cylinder) of head gasket fire ring. I've had a few that heads with orings that bite into the back of the ring. To me its just easier to ruin a head gasket that way.
After seeing some of the heads that have come out of places that "can o-ring" Kev's head comes to right to mind. I am more then a little leary of most machine shops and o-rings.
futureowner I am glad to see you got good service from CT on o-ringing your head, as iirc a few other members here didn't have such good luck.
They really should be cnc milled with a dedicated fixture.

Can you get different size of cutters? I'm game to expertment on one of my head. 0.120 is pretty big wire, how deep you thinking about cutting? You have to think about the protrusion of the wire as well. To much protrusion isn't good either. Typically to want for 9 to 12thou wire protrusion. So you'll have to cut around 0.108ish deep, I think that's to much of a cut.
