Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel???

The GF is looking to replace her sick car and drug me out yesterday to look at a bunch of SUV's and crossovers. She was partial to he looks of a Murano - personally I think they look like the north end of a cow facing south.

We did go on a test drive in an '08 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with the 3.0L CRD. It had 19154 km and they say was listed at ~$40K.

Has anyone heard anything about these....good or bad? It sure rode nice.

Thanks Kevin. I didn't drive it myself because it was not for me, but from what I could tell from the passenger seat, it had some "getty-up" with the diesel. I didn't like the plastic engine cover, but it seems even the gassers have that crap now. I just think its just something that will retain extra heat in the summer.

My boss loves his, especially the mileage he's geting over his old durango with the 4.7. He's had a couple small warranty issues but nothing serious.

You wouldn't happen to know what kind of issues?

My cousin in-law was mentioning bad read diffs have been an ongoing issue, but I believe that may have been on the gassers as they're puny compared to the diesel equipped ones.

Surprisingly, I cannot find any conclusive information between doing a search here on the DTR and Google. The one common denominator I have found however, is the fuel mileage on the gassers is terrible.

I believe the 3.0L CRD used in the Jeep Cherokee is a Mercedes & the 4 cyl diesel used in the Jeep Liberty is from Italy.
Or is it the other way around??
I wonder which transmission is used in the Cherokee? Chrysler or Mercedes?

Chrysler did not sell many of either of these diesels at all. Even if the 3.0L diesel engine in the Cherokee is an excellent engine,
I would be concerned with parts & technical support for this unique combination if you plan to keep it for a while.

read through this :

WK diesel, Jeepsunlimited.com

I read through a few pages, didn't really see many posts about reliability issues with the diesel, for a site with 100 000 members....

It is the way you stated. I believe many of the engines and driveline parts were tested across the pond for a couple years before we ever saw them here. I don't think parts will be the issue.........finding someone who knows what to do with those parts could be another conversation.

Actually they sold alot of the 3 litre. Every sprinter van had one in it. Yes it is a MB, very good engine. As for mechanics, that is the great thing about the diesel engine. If you have fuel, and you have air,, you will probably have a running engine...

My wife has 25K on her limited and she really likes it. Only problem its had was a bit of a tranny leak but a $10 oring fixed it up. But parts seem to be pretty expensive. Get what you can at Mercedes, they seem to be way cheaper. I haven't had to take it to a dealer yet but would definitely look around first as some places have no clue about the diesel. Although its been awesome so far and we really enjoy it.

my friend/boss has one and he really likes it. he upgraded from an older gasser model to the diesel and does not regret it one bit. still has great 'get up and go', drives nice, and gets GREAT fuel mileage.
