I'm in Utah and I think I fried the motor

So came down to Moab Utah this week with the big trailer and Jeep to play on the rocks. First thing I noticed on the 2nd day was boost was down and egts were up a bit. Usually can make 38psi boost and take a fair bit to hit 1400F. Was only seeing 32psi and hitting 1400F egts pretty easy but I;d back off to stay just under 1400F. Also some strange "whooping" noises when letting off the throttle. Inspection showed an exhaust leak at the exhaust manifold/turbo gasket. I figured no big deal still pulling ok I'll fix it in Moab.

Well next day I start getting what sounds like nasty injector knock. Still runs ok, no increase in oil level, still pulled ok so |I continued on and it went away.

Next day 50km outside of Moab the engine starts to miss and pour out white smoke from the exhaust and lots of blowby. Seems like raw fuel is being dumped into the engine big time. Limped it into moab and set up camp. Killed every mosquito along the way.

Soo today |I messed around with it. Pulled the wires off the injectors one by one but couldn't notice a huge difference. Pulled the first 3 injectors but no big difference. I'll pull the last three tomorrow but I think I;m in trouble and maybe melted a piston causing no compression and raw diesel to run out the exhaust.

Any suggestions?

Wow, that's real crappy and I sure hope it turns out to be nothing as major as that. Anyway, you probably already know this, but I've found that if you disable the fuel system so the engine can't start, then crank the engine for a few revolutions, you can usually tell if all the cylinders have fairly even compression just by the sound of the engine cranking. It's not much, but it may help determine if it's just a fueling problem or something worse, without having to find some compression testing equipment out there.
Good luck.

should be easier to find the bad cyl, if right after start up (cold eng) use your hand and touch each part of the manifold where it exits the head, if you have a dead cyl one should be way colder than the others.
I'm assuming this is on a 3rd gen?

I know it won't help you down there, but I do have an adapter for doing compression tests on 24v's that you're welcome to borrow.

It does sound like a bad injector to me though. My truck was similar to your symptoms. I'm just lucky that its not on a CR where it could hydro-lock the engine.

Yep its on the 3rd gen. I actually have a heat gun and tried shooting the manifold but they all came out close to the same. End ones cooler then getting hotter as you move in.

Guess I'll pull the last 3 injectors today. Man I really hate working on those back 3 cylinders....

Sorry to hear that Clay...

Has the engine oil level gone up since the engine got worse?

Perhaps remove the banjo bolt on the rail pressure release valve & see if any fuel is there while the engine is idling.

How about the amount of visible blowby at the valve cover oil fill hole while the engine is idling?

Check engine light on? Perhaps temporarily remove the Edge & try that?
The Edge J/A on your truck connects to everything including the critical MAP & rail pressure sensors.

I hope it's nothing serious....Joe

I don't think you blew a nozzle off, you probably have an injector hanging open, You can try pulling the injectors then pulling the nozzles off and cleaning them, but that may be a bad idea in the desert.

Well I pulled the last 3 injectors and no visible damage. There is a fair bit of blow by out the oil cap but only when its warmed up. None that I can see when its cold. All cylinders seem to warm up fairly evenly.

I almost wonder for these CR engines, you should almost carry a spare set of injectors. Bad luck buddy, hopefully you get her up and going with the minimum of effort. If you have a bad injector, it doesn't take long to hurt stuff. Sorry buddy, if it was closer I would offer to come pick u up.

i've had some mean injector knock since i did my nozzles but it hasn't done anything. I'm leaning towards a sticking injector. How long are you down there for. Can you pull the injectors and have them checked while you are down there?

How far is Moab from SLC? Could go to Industrial to have your injectors checked/fixed. There is another shop in Utah as well, but the name escapes me at the moment.

Well I took it into the dealer and they confirmed what I feared. There is enough blowby to indicate that something is really screwed. More than just injectors.

That blows thewhole vacation. Fortunalty one of the guys from my 4wd club has a new chevy diesel and a 10K trailer so he is going to pull it back for me and my sister is coming up with my dad's truck so I can pull the trailer home.

This sucks big time. Messed up the trac bar on the jeep as well so haven't even been wheeling much....
