Unhappy Fiance put gasoline in our VW TDi

hey all,

the lady poured in 42 litres of regular gas into an almost empty tank of our 2012 TDi wagon.

she called me, i came, and we pushed it away from the pump, into a parking spot at the gas station here in okotoks. the engine NEVER turned over with gasoline in the tank.

AMA will tow it 5 Km for free. i'm hoping a shop here in town can drop/drain the tank, then flush and re-fill with diesel. i would rather NOT have to take it to the dealer due to excessive tow charges, and also i think they will want to do a lot more work than might be necessary.

i think all the lines, filters, and pumps will not have to be touched if the tank just gets dropped and drained. what do you all think? best plan of action?

if i had a lift at my place i would probably attempt this at home, but i don't. nor do i have a reservoir available to drop 50L of fuel into . . .

I am thinking that if you drain your tank as much as possible and refill you will be fine. If it were me I would be sure to add 3-4x as much of a high quality diesel fuel conditioner as a recommended dose. It will be just fine in my opinion.

Good advice here, I wouldn't do any more than that. It makes a difference if the engine was started, and even more difference if it was run until it quit. But your lady did the right thing and you got off easy. Have a look under the tank, I think one of my VWs even had a drain plug in the bottom of the fuel tank. That would sure make things easy.

If nothing else, go buy a couple jerry cans and a length of hose and siphon it out. Then you have gas for your lawn mower.

If you can syphon it out that will work fine. A small amount of gasoline diluted by the diesel will not hurt anything. And like John said, just add some fuel additive to be on the safe side

DEWD! Post up a picture of your fiance and then we will start up a poll to vote on whether or not you should proceed with marriage plans
If you can drain/siphon 99% of the gas out of the tank then do so and fill with fuel and a can or two of conditioner and you should be good to go. Otherwise you have to take it to a shop and drop the tank and drain it that way. MOST diesel motors/injector systems can handle a very very small ratio of gas with fuel. You could ask VW if they know what that ratio is. However, they will likely want you to bring the car in for major $$$$$ work.

The preceding is, of course, my humble opinion only! YMMV so take care and let us know how it all works out for ya!

Cheers!

Mike

LOL, well if we divorced our Fiancee or GF or Spouse everytime they did something not so brilliant, we would all be single!

Conversely if our Fiancee or GF or Spouse divorced us when we did something not so brilliant, we would all be single long ago!
I have definitely had my moments over the years...

Although, I'm not sure how I would react if Wifey filled up our truck with gasoline!

On the technical side of things, this is extremely common. Several times I've seen a TDI at the pumps with the hood up parked next to a gasoline pump.

As the other's mentioned, draining the majority of gasoline out, filling it up with diesel and additive will likely be just fine.
Perhaps a call to a VW dealer would be helpful, as I guarantee they have been asked this before..

Haha, well despite a fit of anger, I don't think I'll be calling her my ex! Well put Joe.

I am on the same page with the suggestions, since it never had a startup attempt I think draining then diluting well, will be ok. I called around a few VW dealers and most of them thought the same, as well as a local mechanic here in town.

I'm going to attempt this at home. The tank has a LP mounted inside that I am able to manually control with VAG-COM software. I am going to use AMA for the 3 block tow home, hoping I can have it backed into the garage. Once in the garage I will:

1) unhook the supply inlet hose on the fuel filter canister, and extend it into jerry cans.

2) run the pump dry until no further gasoline comes out. Set fuel aside for use in other gas engine. In theory, here the line should empty of diesel before it expels the gasoline.

3a) pour in a 5 gallon jerry can of fresh diesel and repeat run dry procedure. Set aside for use in my cummins.

3b) repeat step 3a with fresh diesel.

4) top- off tank with fresh diesel, and a couple bottles of lubricant additive.

5) run pump until new fresh diesel runs out extended hose.

6) re-connect fuel supply line to canister.

7) crank and fire, hope for the best!

Sound like a solid plan? Or do I need to take additional steps?

Jason you would be fine with your plan. I would also drain the injection pump if you can. I had my 2010 ram 3500 fuel tank with gas this summer. I just used my stock 2010 fuel pump to pump out my fuel. I had a young kid at UFA in Camrose put in 46L of gas into a near empty diesel tank.

If it was your old VP truck, I would just fill up the rest of the tank with fuel. Crank your mitsu pump a bunch and purge the fuel lines, and run. I might even add some ATF for injection pump lubrication.

You will be fine and I wouldn't sweat the deal at all. Most newer diesels will shutdown and not run when you put gas in.

Hear bunch of guys running a diesel/gas mix for more power, but I wouldn't recommend its long term use.

I've met Jason GF, and I say she's a keeper myself. Good luck Jason.
