Edmonton (moving???)

Yesterday,I was thrown a job bone. The catch is,the job is located in Edmonton.I heard that Edmonton is slower pace than Calgary and drivers are not as crazy as in Calgary.I was even thinking about living in places like Spruce Groove and Sherwood Park....I lived in Calgary since 1988 and found it to be growing to fast and employment is geared towards cheap labour and getting worse. What does others think about Edmonton and surrounding areas.Or I'm I just nuts moving??

Ive never lived in Calgary but have spent some time there. From what Ive seen Edmonton isnt any slower than Cowtown.

That being said, Calgary is a nicer town and the proximity to the mountains cant be beat.

I would say, take a weekend and visit the place as a tourist. If you are like me, its always a trip in to get what you need done, and then out...

My wife likes Edmonton as much as Calgary as its much greener in places. Thats a tough move. From the actual business center of the province to the "Capital" city. Of course the local hockey team is trying to change the city of champions theme...LOL...

I lived in Edmonton for most my life and then moved to Sherwood Park. Been here for 4 years now. The Park is much quieter, no bums asking for change, good neighborhoods, awesome walking trails and atmosphere. I will never live in the city again. Edmonton is good if you live on the out skirts/new developments. The only draw back to the Park is that you will do most of your clothes, electronics, etc. shopping in Edmonton.

Like lil Dog said, spend the weekend up here and just cruise around. You will get many opinions about E-Town and the burbs, best bet is to experience it yourself

No offense to anyone residing, but it should be noted that Sherwood Park is downwind of refinery row and a good portion is in the blast zone. Prevailing winds are NW in Alberta. One of the reasons I refuse to live anywhere that way. Fort Saskatchewan is in the same boat.

I do know that St. Albert is expensive along with a lot of young crap disturbers running around. This is from my law enforcement background, 90% of my files dealt with young offenders - lots of break ins, drugs, and domestic disturbances.

Spruce Grove and Stony Plain are in close proximity to a few major reserves that result in a fair number of issues in those areas.

I haven't heard any real bad things about Gibbons, Bon Accord, and Morinville lately.

I live in Carlisle in the NW corner of Edmonton. 27 y/o neighborhood. Fairly quiet with the occasional rat around the neighborhood just like any other in the city. The majority of gun play / gang activity occurs on the SE side (Millwoods) of the city and recently, the West end near WEM area. Anywhere downtown of any city is always a bad idea to live.

If you find a neighborhood you might like, just ask, I still have some contacts with EPS and the RCMP.

I've got a nice house in Sherwood Park for sale. It's great for young families, lots of bike trails, lots of parks. I've lived here for over 5 years and never been bothered by emmissions from the Refineries. Years back you could smell methane when you drove into Edmonton on baseline, but they stopped that. There doesn't seem to be as many teenage hoodlums here, never heard of any crime in my neighborhood and it's pretty quiet(somebody painted the nieghbors fence on Halloween, but it was an isolated incident). You don't want to commute into the city on the 9 to 5 routine, traffic is a little slow heading east/west. The taxes here seem about 20% lower than an equivilent house in St. Albert. All and All a really nice community, many of my friends have moved here, and I'm just relocating to a little bigger lot to store a few more toys(sled trailer).

Well you heard wrong.....drivers drive just as fast as calgary, everyone in a honda thinks they own the road, and every one is in a hurry. Calgary and Edmonton are growing at the same pace. Both are growing 12-15% every 5 years, so that part is the same as well. Living in a suburb or fringe of the city is the way too go. Personaly I enjoy edmonton more than calgary, but right now they are pretty much even in everything: cost of living isn't much different, idiot drivers, and both are sitting around 1.1 million.

Id have to agree with them on checking it out. I was born and raised pretty well all my life in Edmonton. The one thing that really gets to me is the crime rate in the city, since ive moved to sherwood park im not scared to leave my truck overnight, or getting jumped when leaving the cash machine.Honestly,i do not know if ill ever move back into city limits, but thats expected with any city growing as fast as we are!!

My brother lives in a new house in Sh. Park. About a week ago, someone about a block down had their truck window broken. The creep(s) then used the garage door opener in the truck to go in and clean the place out. I hate to say it, but crime's everywhere. (Yes- some places are worse than others.)

My aunt had the convertable top of her 'stang slashed in Sherwood park last year for no reason at all, sitting on the driveway overnight nothing was stolen, no windows smashed nothing but a cut from front to back.
I find in edmonton i get cutoff about 5 times more often and usually alot worse then when im cruisin around calgary.

Man this is interesting reading!! Sure glad I didn't check here before I moved to Edmonton three years ago. All I had was a recommendation on a realtor. Talked to him, exchanged emails, reviewed some listing and finally flew in and bought one. Come on up, drive around, go to the coffee shops and/or other public places. People here are really friendly and will talk to you. You want health statistics, phone Capital Health and get them from Population Health. Good luck and happy hunting.
