Like the title says, I broke some parts in the transmission in my '98.

I was pulling into the yard and it would not come out of 5th coming off the highway. Naturally I was kinda upset, as I had it apart for the 5th gear nut not too long ago, and thought that it had loosened off again....wrong!

Anyway, after I pulled it apart I found some pieces in the bottom of the tail housing. The lower one is the whole one I pulled out of the syncro assembly with the spring, but the other two pieces were in the tail housing. As far as I can find out there called syncro keys. But hey, the fifth gear nut looked fine! lol

What would cause these to break? And are how hard is it going to be to find some replacements?

Also, I noticed the syncro on fifth looks to be brass? I thought these trannys came with a fancy composite syncho. I suppose they could have been changed in the past, but the previous owner was pretty detailed in what he had done to the truck, and never mentioned a tranny rebuild. He was the original owner too.

I am going to pull the pto covers and look for the other pieces, and see if the rest of the syncro rings are brass too. If so, would this mean I could run normal GL-5 gear oil in it?

 

That sucks man. I dont know huge amounts about the 5 speeds, but if there is anything I can do to help dont hesitate to ask

Ok, forund the parts. The gear center in edmonton had them in stock, so now it should just have to re-assemble it. Parts were only 5 bucks at least though.

 

Thats pretty good when I rebuilt my 5 speed the gear center wouldn't sell me syncros, only complete gear assyembles for like $200. I found all brass syncros in my tranny when I pulled it apart, I got some sycros from some local rebuild shop and they had fiber matteral on them for a friction surface, after the build the tranny shifted the exact same as it did before I took it apart.

 

Hmmn, well it looks like just replacing the syncro keys won't do the trick. Changed them it last night and it still wants to hang up in fifth. I'm starting to think the shift fork may me bent. Dang!

 

If it is the shift fork thats bent,I priced them out about 4 months ago..The forks are about $50 each as I remember..

 

Well that's not too bad of a price. At least fifth is easy to disassemble, no need to tear the whole tranny apart. Everything looks nice, so I think I will get the shift fork and see what happens.

 

Ok, update on my tranny. I priced out the whole 5th gear assembly with the fork out of a place in the states, then decided to see what it was locally. Was pleasently surprised to find that the gear centers prices were just about half of what they were south of the border. Can't remember the last time something was cheaper in Canada, and never by such a large margin. Mind you they were jobber parts, but so were the ones I was pricing in the U.S.

Anyway, got the whole 5th gear assembly and the shift fork, they had it all in stock, re-assembled the tranny and viola, shifts perfect! So the tractor is fixed and back on the road! Can't believe how much I enjoy driving this old rig, put 50,000kms on it in the last year and only about 8,000 on my '06.
