Just bought a 2010 2500 laramie and am in the process of looking for aftermarket tires. I noticed that all 4 tires are monitored for pressure separately with the tpms. Since the front tires require a different pressure than the rear tires, What happens when you rotate them?
OK, I realize you need to change the pressure but now you have a rear sensor in the front position with less pressure. I guess I'm asking if you have to break the tires down and change the sensors, if not, how does it know?

there are sensors in the wheels that do the "triggering" for the respective position. each position i.e front left and right, and rear left and right have "monitors" that read the sensor in that wheel. So, it doesnt matter which wheel you rotate, as long as you adjust the pressure for front or rear.

Be aware - the sensors are attached to the valve stems via a screw inside the tire...when you remove the sensors they require new valve stems that have the ability to have the sensors attached to them, and those new stems are not available separately! So you have to buy a new sensor and stem "assy" (I've never seen anyone able to remove a rubber stem and reuse it) - I got them for less than $30 each, but some dealers sell them for quite a bit more.
I had one new stem fail likely because it was knicked when being installed -the dealer nearest to where I was when it failed was going to charge me $53 for the new stem and sensor, until I cried and they reduced to $34. (that's parts only, labor is on top of that)

Hmmmm - interesting. It's the stems (not the sensors) that usually can't be reused - do you suppose they found a way to remove those stems without damaging them and reinstall them in the new wheels? Like I said, I've never seen it done, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. I was even trying to figure out a way you could strap the sensor in like other mfr's, or glue it in, so it doesn't have to be attached to the stem... But I'll bet your installers figured out how to remove the stem without damaging it - no one out here even wants to try that, but maybe they can learn something from wherever you got yours? Next time you get the chance, ask them if you would. (or maybe someone is making aftermarket stems that the stock sensors can still attach to?) I don't have this on my 05, but it will be on my 2010. This whole idea is new to me, I know when the truck arrives I could prob read about it in the owners manual, however I'm going to ask here first.
Is there a way to program the vehicle (computer) to let it know what tire pressure I want to keep in each tire ? When I change tires and the new ones recommend a different air pressure, how do I let the truck know this ?

welcome arcojet. i kinda remember the tire place telling me they had to replace the stems but im not certain, its been several months. In any event, the sensors themselves can be and do get reused, i think we can all agree on that.
your truck has a light load and heavy load setting for tire pressure. On the door there is a sticker which tells you or whoever what the tire pressure needs to be for front and rear for both settings for the alarms not to go off. From what i understand, the dealer can change these paramters for you if you dont like how they are set.
I personally dont care to mess with changing pressure in my tires or hitting the light load button, so i have all my tires at 72lbs of air (e-rated to 80lbs). yes it is a bit rougher ride and i dont tow all the time but i just dont want to mess with it. With fluctuations in temps of 0 degress to 89 degress, i have yet to see the alarm going off for low pressure. This is what i personally prefer.
