Hello. I'm getting ready to order a new 2014 Ram 1500 w/Diesel and considering the trade off between the Cargo Box system compared to going with a Camper top. It appears to be an either or situation as I could not find a topper option compatible with the Cargo Box system.

I'd appreciate any feedback, comments, stories of regret etc.

If you are referring to the Fender Cargo Tool Box cavities on either side of the box and not a bed cargo slider tray...a friend of mine has that Cargo Box option on his '13 2500 4x4...he uses it for tools, straps, cables, tow chains and misc gear...both sides of the pick up box directly below the cargo door openings are all nicked up from gear hitting the paint as he loads and unloads. Personally I think the idea of this storage area looks great on paper and in the Dodge catalog pic's...but I would be cautious of the results over time slinging gear in and out. Also, I doubt you will find any cargo cap that will fit and still allow you to access these door openings as they are the top of the box itself...right were a cap/camper/cover would be attached....my 2 cents worth!!

 

XLR8 - Yes this the Ram CargoBox system in question. I have yet to find any toppers spec'd to go with it. Thanks for the feedback.

 

Unless you have a real need for the Ram Box it is not worth the cost and the fact you can't put a topper on it without losing the use of it. I just picked up a 2013 2500 with it but the deal was really to good to pass up and I don't have a need for a topper.

 

The Ram Box also reduces the size of your bed, and may not even allow some truck-campers to fit anyway.

 

Correct. Any "basement" model TC will not fit. Nor any other topper, most tonneau covers etc.
I like the idea for tool storage for a DD. Not meant to be a contractors tool box at all, but considering my truck has a tonneau, topper, sled deck or camper in the bed also most 100% of the time depending on the season it would be useless to me. But a guy like my buddy who uses it as a DD and towing his boat only, it would be ideal.

 

In short, it's a great idea- but think carefully before buying one as it may not be for you.
