New Truck Comments and Question

I had a 2000 2500 2WD LB 5.9 Cummins and I loved the truck. The auto transmission sucked.

I had a 2002 2500 4WD LB 5.9 6 speed with Jacobs Exhaust Brake that was a dream for towing. Except for the fuel transfer pump it was a great truck.

I had a 2007 2500 5.9 4WD Mega Cab with auto that gave me very little trouble. I just traded it with 135k miles and the 48E transmission was still going strong.

I now have a 2014 3500 SRW 4WD Crew Cab LB and I am amazed. Took my 12k 5th wheel for a quick drag today and wow! There is a big difference between it and my 2007 2500. Power, handling, exhaust brake, integrated brake controller. Wow! I am going to really enjoy this truck. I have a few questions.

1. Is the MPG computer still off by a couple of MPG and basically worthless?
2. I have always used Rotella oil. Is that still good for the 6.7 engine?
3. The owners manual says to change the oil every 15k miles or 6 months. Do I really have to change it at 6 months? What is up with that?
4. The transmission sometimes lets the RPMs go up a couple of hundred RPMs on upshifts. Is this normal?
5. Is the fuel filter a cartridge inside a canister or is it a spin on?

Thanks in advance,
Bobby

1. it's pretty accurate and so is the DTE, distance to empty.
2. I don't use rotella but if it was good for the 5.9 it's good for the 6.7, it does say that if used in temps below I think -18C then 5W40 must be used or engine damage can occur, we use Amsoil 5W40 year round, oil filter same as the 5.9.
3. Depending on your type of driving you may encounter pretty good oil dilution from the fuel, my son is doing oil and filter on his 2013 at 10, 000km and it needs it.
4. you don't say if you have the Aisin or the 68RFE transmission, I have the 68RFE and my son the Aisin, I haven't noticed that on mine but I also have the H&S transmission tuning.
5. on the 2013/14 there are 2 fuel filters one is a cartridge similar to the 5.9 but not the same one cost about $50 and the second is up by the fuel tank again cost about $50.

Thanks for the info BusBoy. I have the 68RFE transmission.

I took the 5th wheel for a longer drag yesterday. This truck tows the 5th wheel much better than the 2500. More stable, integrated brake controller works great and power to spare. I am going to really like this truck. I like having an exhaust brake again.

But there are a few things that bug me.

1. I have the basic radio. There is no way to display the time with the radio off. I know I can program the dash display for time but that only works if you are not displaying any other info on the display. I am always looking at something on the display. Every vehicle I have had since 1976 has had a clock display. Really Dodge? I have to buy a $5.00 stick on clock from the Dollar Store for a $50k vehicle?

2. Map lights? Every Dodge I have had (this is number 5) had map lights. And I did not have to purchase the $15k Laramie package to get them. Really? That will be a $50 addition.

3. CD player. It is mounted in the bottom arm rest storage. So if I want to change CDs on the road, I have to remove my Big Gulp along with sunglasses, change and other stuff that collects in the 3 cup holders. Raise the arm rest, raise the lower cover, move the stuff that is stored in the lower storage area and then push in a CD. Then put everything back? This seems like the most retarded thing I have ever seen. Who came up with that bright idea? Dodge put in 5, count them, 5 cup holders but can't put a CD player in the dash?

4. Vehicle Summary in the dash. I like the idea. But how hard would it have been to allow the owner to program which data he wants to see in the summary. When I am towing I want to monitor different data versus just driving around empty.

5. The diesel supplement manual is on CDROM. So if I have a malfunction on the road and don't have a laptop so I can read the CDROM I am just stuck? For $50k I can't get a printed diesel owners manual?

I love the mechanical parts of the truck. But saving a few bucks on stuff that the owner sees and deals with every day seems odd.

On my 2014 the computer (without the trailer) is off by 2-3 mpg. Fl to Mi trip showed 23-25 mpg while I was only getting (pencil & paper figured) was getting 21-23. I didn't get the ced player in mine and I really miss it. USB stick or SD memory card and the time to load from my laptop. I like you do not really like the dash summary and even with the nav 9.3 radio it is bare of a clock turned off. Really like the truck but for the money it is lacking....
