AutoZone Cashier

Well, I went down today to get the oil for the first oil change on my new truck. I walked out to the cashier and as I was checking out the kid (16-17 years old I guess) ask what I was putting all that oil in. I told him and he then asked about what kind of mileage I was getting. I told him I'm currently getting in the 9mpg range pulling my 17K 5th wheel RV but the truck only have 7000 miles on it. I have not really driven the truck very far without the trailer, so I'm not sure what my mileage is without the trailer.

His next words, just about floored me. He said and I quote. "I should be getting 23mpg or higher pulling my trailer, and 48mpg empty." He went on to explain that he helped his friend install a computer chip, new air filter, and removed the cat on a 2500. Now his friend is getting that kind of mpg. He even volunteered to help me fix my truck if I wanted. I told him that the truck was new and under warrant and that I was not going to do anything to void the warranty just yet. I just laughed as I left.

Maybe we should all call him at work and toy with him by telling him that we're interested in better mpg.

Wow!! 23 mpg loaded!!! I want what is friend installed then!! Does autozone sell flux capacitors now or what!! I don't think even with CNG you could get that high, but having the coin to invest is something in it's own!! I would also bet is friend has 800 hp on all stock parts and a low buck programmer!!

23 mpg towing. Nice. Math is harrrrrdddd.... Good thing that cash register tells him the change. If he had to count it out like the old days, AutoZone would go broke...

What did he install? A push truck behind it so that his friend's truck can just coast in neutral most of the time?

I wish I had asked now. All I know is he installed a new air filter of some kind, and something that he referred to as a computer chip. He seam to think I didn't know anything about what a computer chip was. If he only know what I did a living. Any case, I was done with him at that point and looking for the first exit away from him. If I see him again, I may just have to make something up and see if he bites. Anthony

Just tell him you hooked your home computer up to your truck and now get 43.546 miles per gallon with a mix of 42.7% city, 62.4% highway and that's on unleaded diesel, to boot. Top that, Mr. AutoZoneMan! Give him the Crazy Eyeball Look while you slowly back up towards the door, exit, and run to your truck....
