I assume your talking about how tight the locking pin is, that holds the hitch in the receiver, correct? I need to re-adjust mine, I can't get it to unlock.

That's correct, I shimmed mine then tightened it to their torques. By shimming it stops the post from tightening up on the locking pin yet it's in the right location every time. Just means I can take the hitch in and out without unbolting every time. There are a number of people doing it this way and what made me even more comfortable was one person said they did a bunch of miles without the pin in as they forgot to lock it so really what kind of load is actually on that pin. I'd say zero.

Ive never had an issue with my Companion. Set it the first time and it comes out really easy.

Their instruction now say to torque the pull down bolt to 40 ft lbs against the lock pin then tighten the u bolts to 80 ft lbs. They say you should NOT be able to pull the pin release.

wow that seems excessive to me.. i set mine up with the companion sitting in the hole and did up the pull down bolt so it was just pulling on the pin. My wife can pull the pin handle easy..

keep in mind the Companion is rated for 16000 lbs..

Firestorm.. you are correct.. With that in mind i was 2018 lbs away from max load not 18 lbs away from max load..

I had a slider in short bed Dodge 1500 and ALWAYS used the slider when backing up and parking the trailer. The distance was to close and even busted my back glass one time (bicycle) and trailer to close when not slided back. Better safe than replacing a window. I have LB now and don't need it, but installed it anyway so I didn't have to buy a new hitch.

There is no "approved" method only the factory method but that fails to account for the hitch being removed and installed constantly. The pull down bolt and the u bolts will stretch over many applications and the lock nuts (which really should only be used once) will lose their locking ability. What I did was install large washers on top of the post I added different thicknesses of washers until the lock pin could just be removed with the bolt torqued to 40 ft lbs. I then tightened the u bolts to 80 ft lbs.
