Smarty Confusion
I don't have any experience with the JR so, I can only tell you about the way it works with the SR.
If you run just the standard software(not ME), all emissions equipment stays in place. However, the EGR is commanded to 0 all the time. So, at least the soot isn't getting pumped back in the engine. You will still have regen's just not as often and my regen's didn't seem to get as hot as before.
In the case of the ME software, SW 0 with all other settings at default (1, I think) will give you stock power levels with all emissions equipment turned off.
ONLY when you select "Return to Stock" does the Smarty load the OEM, all emissions turned on, software. The high idle feature will still be active, and I think the tire adjustments will stay programmed.

I think it's all pretty clear now. What I don't like is that it isn't truly "vin locked"...vin may be part of the lock but it's not a true vin locked tuner because even the dealer over-writes your flash smarty doesn't care if the vin matches or not. In pre-egr/dpf days this wasn't a big deal because "returning to stock" for a dealer visit didn't involve removing and replacing parts but now that it does I see this as a huge disadvantage. I'm gonna send them an email and see what they say and ask if it's possible to make it "just vin locked" and nothing else.
thanks
thanks
SW0 is VIN locked with stock software on a Jr, at least thats how I read the owners manual.
The reason it doesn't work after a re-flash is the tuner thinks the truck is tuned, so even thou the VIN matches the tune doesn't.

This is what's confusing me...this is from madselectronics site:
http://www.madselectronics.com/SmartyJ67ME.html
"This product is for Middle East, East Europe, South
America and Africa markets ONLY, where the
emissions regulations do not require the DPF and
NOx adsorber technology."
So if I lived in South America, ordered a smarty, and then for whatever reason decided to "return to stock" wouldn't the smarty screw my truck up because it was loading an "emissions turned on" factory tune on a truck that doesn't have emissions?
Sorry to keep pestering...I'll go ahead (and like i said i would) email them and get a definitive answer and post it here..
thanks
FYI I really want to go with smarty because I remember a loooong time ago when Marco started posting on the TDR forums saying he was gonna crack the ECM and everybody thought he was a nutjob
lol guess he had the last laugh! I just can't handle R&R'ing a bunch of crap to go to the dealer...and I don't have one I can trust to not throw some flash on it because there's a recall or something...

OK...emailed MADS and got these responses (good news in my opinion on #2).
1-With ME tune loaded on Smarty when you "return to stock" is it a factory US or ME tune that is loaded - Answer: US (emissions on)
2- If smarty tune is loaded and dealer flashes over tune, will smarty still work as long as vin # matches (mads website says no) - Answer (verbatim) : Hello,
the Smarty software has been improved. That old problem is still present only on Smarty S03, for VP trucks.
Smarty JR67ME works perfectly also in case of reflash by the Dodge dealer. The important point is that the VIN# matches.

Man I am looking at buying a programmer and deleting but you guys have totally confused me with all your abreviations.
Maybe I should just buy an H&S programmer. Sound like they got their chit together better than Smarty.

For me, important thing is better MPG, no worries about being able to re-flash the truck if dealer over-writes a flash, turning off all emissions, and being able to run with the cat on (stock downpipe) and dpf/nox (2 big filters under the truck) removed. They both do all of this (with exception of cat..h&s told me the cat would get plugged up) and smarty does it $500 cheaper.

Just curious..in what way? What abbreviations? I've spent a lot of time researching both of them so if you have questions I (or somebody else here) may be able to answer them.

smarty sr $685
gauges $350
total $1035
smarty jr $495
gauges $350
total $845
H&S minimax $949.05
(has built in gauges)
as for both of them doing the same end result (deleting EGR, Cooler and DPF functions yes, gauges H&S has em)
so the $500 difference is more like -$104.05 on the small side and +$85.95 more expensive by going smarty sr and gauges (that does not include boost bolt or any upgrades, based on autometer 3 gauge kit (phantom gauges))
Not to get in a pissin match but I'm running for MPG and will not add power or disable built in protections so I won't be running any guages. This is my 6th cummins and I had guages on 1 of them and for how I drive/tow they just aren't necessary. If you're gonna hot rod, etc.. then yes (I would use mechanical guages either way) but for what I do I don't need 'em.
I think both tuners are great but depending on what you want to do one of them will definitely be better....it will all depend on what you want.

just my .02 i run gauges even on a bone stock truck. being able to monitor egt and other sectors of the motor enable a person to keep things in check and they also work very well in diagnosing issues.

I lean the way of Chris with this. The very next thing I put on my truck will be gauges. Probably pretty soon too.
What I mean is....I'm too lazy to figure out a way for myself, so you do it

Please.....

Well I never use the grab handle.... Period. So the A pillar is my favorite spot. I'm sure you could go over the rear view though.
