MPG deleted

My son called the other day to tell me he was on the hiway towing a 26ft deck open goose trailer with equipment on it and doing about 65MPH, he said he had a pretty good tail wind but the EVIC said 9L per 100km or 27.2MPG. Since this truck has been deleted it has got incredible mileage but that is crazy. The winds were gusting to 90kph /56mph.

Uhh...

That doesn't sound right. Granted, my truck is new and an auto and 4WD and has 35's and is about as aerodynamic as a brick, but I'm deleted and get almost 13 mpg in the city and around 17 on the highway if I drive slow. And that's running empty bed with no trailer. 27 mpg sounds dang near impossible for these trucks. Especially towing.

He doesn't keep track of fuel mileage as he doesn't pay for fuel but I think he is in the same range you are with no trailer, those figures he gave had something to do with the 56MPH tail wind. I just about always have something hooked up and at best I am about half that 9MPG.

How slow? Those results may not be worth deleting for. I am getting between 12 and 13 mpg on the highway running 80mpg. I get around 10 on the ROW and in town.

65-70 mph gets me around 17 mpg. Any faster than that and it drops significantly. If I cruise at 80 it drops to about 14 mpg. My avg mpg per the computer is 12.4 for what you could appropriately call suburban driving (not really city but not really highway).

I average roughly 15 mpg combined. I anticipate the mpg to increase more once it becomes warmer. I waste a lot of fuel warming my truck up because while it is warming up the efficiency is poor.

I did an experiment this morning and took the toll road to work instead of my usual stop and go drive. The numbers below are on relatively level ground with no load and cruise control set on the noted speeds. I tried to run each speed for 5 miles.

80 mph ~ 12 mpg
75 mph ~ 14 mpg
70 mph ~ 16 mpg
65 mph ~ 17 mpg

I average around 12.5 mpg for my everyday driving, which is empty and what I'd call "suburban" as noted above.

They suck the fuel people might get good mileage on flat but not in these mountains.People come up with some crazy numbers that just is not so instead of admitting there terrible on fuel.I have owned a bunch of these trucks and they all got good fuel mileage and all of them was heavily modded. Last one i drove and towed everyday with 700 Hp everyday and got close to 20.

No doubt the 4th Gens don't get the fuel mileage that earlier generations did. My '03 AVERAGED 20-21 mpg and that was under the exact same driving conditions my '12 averages 12.5ish. Granted, my '03 was a 2WD short bed with stock tires and a 6 speed manual tranny. It was a completely different truck for sure. But I'd still like to see upper teens on this one for every day driving. I see a lot of people claiming 20ish mpg in a 4th Gen and I just don't see how. Maybe on a stock 2WD in perfect driving conditions, but it seems unlikely for a 4WD auto driving under "normal" conditions.

It seems the more I drive with the deletes, the better my fuel mileage gets. First week following the delete, averaged 13 mpg (could also be because I enjoyed driving on the "hot" setting) after that, every week since, I have increased 0.5-0.7 mpg. Currently I am at 15.5 mpg. My driving style includes: moderate acceleration, no granny acceleration for me , I drive anywhere between 70-85 mph on the highway. Today I drove 80-85 mph on the highway and still maintained my 15.5 mpg.

Currently in CT the temperatures have been cold, sub freezing, so I anticipate once the temperatures warm-up, I'll see more of an increase. Additionally, I drive whenever possible with the exhaust brake on and I NEVER use cruise control. I've found the ECU does a poor job of modulating speed and has an inverse effect on fuel efficiency.

Just a little background of my current experiences. Hope that helps
