This may not belong in this forum but it doesn't really fit anywhere else so here goes.....

I have a 86 CJ8 Jeep that I purchased recently that came with a brand new Cummins 4BT 3.9 engine. I want the finished product to look like a concept vehicle built by Dodge, Jeep and Cummins. I would like to use an exhaust manifold and turbo from a 5.9 but am having a hard time finding someone who is willing to work with me on some custom pieces. Can anyone suggest a contact to help me out with this? This Jeep is a super rare CJ8 with a world cab steel hard top and only 38,000 miles. So is there anyone out there who can help me bring this vision to life?

The engine....

 

For openers, the 6bt manifold will have two extra ports for cylinders your 4bt doesn't have. 4cyl vs 6 cyl. Contacting Steed Speed may be able to get you a good "custom" manifold. An HX35 (2nd gen 5.9 turbo) would do ok for a tuned up 4bt. There is a conversions section of the forum that this thread probably belongs in.
Are you going to need heavier springs for the front at least to support that engine?

I agree on the heavier springs on the front. I sold my 2006 TJ because it couldn't carry the tongue weight of loaded trailers on the front, they just flatted it while my Landrover handled them with no problem. Seems like the factory springs are quite light. Duh Just took another look at the pics I see it's NOT a TJ and has leafs, at least you have a fighting chance.

 

I wonder about airbags at both ends, that would be a concept-y type feature.

 

The guys at Steed Speed actually have just finished designing a custom 4BT exhaust manifold and it is just what I was looking for. I had been looking at the 4BTSwap sight but most everyone there were taking the 6BT manifolds and cutting the two outside runners off and welding a plate over the hole. While functional just didn't fit the bill of a concept truck build. I have a shop that builds custom Jeeps designing cross members and spring packs to handle the weight of the 4BT. I really appreciate the tip to Steep Speed! They in turn put me in touch with Auto World (who commissioned Steed to build the 4BT manifold) as they do Cummins conversions. Turns out they are about to do the same thing and are willing to share their findings with me when they complete their build.

I wonder though, are the Jeep purists upset that you're not restoring such a rare model to the factory configuration?

 

The Jeep guys pretty much say it is my Jeep, build it anyway I want. The original owner was a photographer who traveled to Africa taking pictures. He was outfitting the Jeep for this purpose. Unfortunately he passed away before he could finish the build. He amassed a large stock pile of parts but never got around to the assembly. The Jeep then sat in the back of a shop for 12 years until I found and bought it.

 

Very nice original CJ8 tub. I would think it would be perfect for that conversion..........I just wish it was mine!

Bring it out to Moab Utah when you are done. It is Jeep heaven. You will find a popular bumper sticker that says "Ask me about my $ 75,000 Jeep" you will probably need one :-)
