Turbo?

Pulled out from a red light and noise from the engine sounding like a shop vac with hardly any power. Checked the turbo and it doesn't turn free unless you push it. Put it back together and started and revved just a little and the engine started running away and a big cloud of gray smoke rolled out the exhaust. 2014 2500 6.7 with 46000 miles.

Probable Turbo, engine running away was probably lube oil that got into the intake tract.

I would think it should still be under warranty.

Update

Made an appt at the dealer, service tech said it would be covered if the turbo was the problem but would have to check it first. Take it in on Monday. After a closer look at the turbo, it appears as if the vanes have partially broken around the outside edge of the vanes. There were no shavings in the intake air pipe so if it was broken off would the small pieces have been sucked into the engine? It looks like the bearing has failed and caused the impeller to lodge against the volute intake. Just guessing. I'll advise the outcome.

If you're lucky, they got stuck in the intercooler so make sure they check/replace it as well.

Regardless, I'd be asking for a new engine .... not just a turbo.

The head tech said that the turbo failed causing the intake blades to contact the housing and lock up. The pieces that had broken off were found lodged in the intercooler. All new turbo unit and intercooler on order and under warranty.
