I'm running 285-70/r17s (Hankook Dynapro) no problem. In fact I wish I'd gone with 305s or even 315s to fill out the wheel well a bit more. I have a 2" level and airbags but still.... you'll be fine even stock.

Looking at the tire size you stated were on your truck I assume you have a dually??

ON my SRW I fit 285-70-17 on stock rims with no rub. And others are running 295-70-17 with no rub and no lift.

No a single wheel. There is alot of room to fill in. I pull a fifth wheel and I just want more tire!

With SRW 285-70-17 fits my 2010 great. I am using Toyo Open Country AT's E rated at 3750 pounds. Drive great, have heard tire wear is not so great. Just wanted safety first with cost a secondary issue. With a camper was running pretty heavy on the rear tires, with a 5ER you likely will be up in rear axle load also.

Oh, and it's my understanding the Powerwagon comes with 285-70/r17s, so it's not like the truck can't handle them (whatever that's supposed to mean...)

285/70r17's are like going from a 3.73 to a 3.42 axle ratio. I personally like it better than the 265's my truck came with.
Only thing I wish I did was go with the Nitto Dura Grappler 285/75r17..

Did your MPG go down much? I pull a 12,000 fifth wheel now and the truck pulls with plenty of power now. I do not want to loose that.

In my experience is the 6-speed auto tranny must compensate some for the larger tire size. On my 3rd gen with the 4-speed auto I lost 2mpg going to 285s from the stock 245s. On the new truck there is no difference in mpgs with the bigger tires, empty or towing. Both had 3.73s.

By the way, I turn 1800 rpms at 75mph with this truck, old truck was 2100 rpms.

The Hankook Dynapro AT/M fits that description, and wears well too. Had them on the last two trucks, very satisfied.

Weigh about twice what your average tire weighs as well. Very tough tire. Run them on everything at work for puncture resistance.
