Mexico Pemex High Sulfur Fuels

I have a 1999 3500 Dually and thinking about the future in the event I have to replace my dually with a new one. How are the new Ram Diesels affected by high sulfur fuels like we have in Mexico? Can it be used or does it require mods to use it?

Tony

You will have to remove all the emissions equipment.

Would you purchase the truck in the US or Mexico? I didn't think the Mexico trucks had the DPF crap yet??

What emmissions have been added?
Price of a truck like that in Mexico would be too expensive. Plus duallies in registered in Mexico are classed as commercial with very high fees. I will buy in the USA.

They have a EGR and DPF setup that would need to be removed to run LSD. That will run about $1300, which includes the aftermarket programmer. The issue, if it is an issue, is that you will essentially void your warranty in doing so.

Tony, are you sure that the diesel in Mexico is still high sulfur? I am receiving info that that has changed, but am not sure. Am hearing that the new diesel has only 15 ppm of sulphur. Supposedly it also has 5% biodiesel added so it has more lubricity. Don't think it is in all states yet. Also supposedly there is the sign, "bajo azufre" below the word "Diesel" on the gas station signage, but keep on forgetting to look for this.

I run alot of Pemex diesel throught the yacht I skipper. I have ask this question to many of the Pemex fuel providers and they indicate it is high sulfur. High sulfur is also a concern on the many of the new marine diesels. Because of the high sulfur fuels our vessel MTU reps tell me to change oil and filters more often then if we were operating in the USA. I will look for those signs.

I spoke to a highly rated marine diesel mechanic who's been replacing injectors and injection pumps like crazy in Cabo San Lucas-La Paz areas. He brought a sample of the fuel up here for analysis. They found it was ULSD and almost totally devoid of lubricants. He's recommending everyone add Stanadyne Lubrication formula to their fuel down there. I heard Baja is being supplied with our ULSD as they don't have the refining ability yet. This was a year ago??

If you run an oil that is not CI4+ I believe you don't have to change the oil/filters as often. The new oil is also "emissions friendly".

Valvoline Premium Blue Classic and John Deere oil I believe are not CI. You can use the search function on this site and learn more about it.

You've got to run the new oil though with the new emissions diesels though....

In my opinion, on the truck I wouldn't worry about it if you delete it, same thing with the oil.
