Fuel Milage and DEF consumption

So back in June I upgraded to a 3500 SRW megacab Longhorn with the aisin. I have a 24 1/2 foot fifthwheel and an 18 1/2 foot Searay Boat. When I picked up the truck the Def tank was full. In July and August I did alot of pulling of both in tandem and the first tank of Def lasted 4200 km and that was till the low DEF indicator came on. So I put two 9.46 liter boxes of DEF into the truck and it brought the gauge back to 100%

Today I figured out the mpg based on the amount fuel the that the EVIC says the truck has used since new. Here are the numbers 10063 km = 6289 miles.
1439 liters of fuel = 317 Canadian gallons. Works out to 19.8 mpg, I am really happy with that. The second tank of DEF is still above half.

You can get DEF at the big truck pumps for $0.79/L at Flying J's. Cheaper than by the bottle if that helps out. I'm also very impressed with the mileage of my 2013 2500. Not too far off from what I made with my 2003 actually with wayyy more power!

I also have the 3500 Laramie with the Aisin and I only have 1600 Kms on it since new but do not see any movement on my DEF gauge.

I leave right after Christmas for Yuma pulling my Jayco Eagle and was wondering how I would deal with DEF. I did not know that Flying J has a pump for it, my diesel dealer does not have this option.

Most all of the big truck stops, TA, Loves, Pilot, and so on, all have the bulk DEF pump at the big truck fuel islands. I have not seen any one install DEF pumps at the regular vehicle fuel islands yet.

We didn't see any movement on the DEF gauge until about 4000 kms (2485 miles). That's about the time we made our first tow - 14,000 lb Montana, and the gauge started to move. Now at about 6000 kms (3728 miles) it's below half. The towing would have kicked in a lot more DEF consumption.

Can someone tell me if the bulk pumps for DEF at the truck stops sense full like the diesel pump nozzle, or do you have to estimate how much you need and shut of before overflow?

Yes they are an automatic nozzle just like the diesel nozzle.

Some times the def nozzle will act like the tank is full, when you try to squeeze the handle it will just click like it senses a full tank. I had one one day pump a couple tenths of a gallon then stop, I messed with the thing for ten minutes, then gave up. I have since found the best way to fill def with out that issue, is kink the hose before you squeeze the handle, once nozzle is open, un kink hose, should pump until full this way.

I had to go over to my dealer a couple of days ago as my check engine light came on for no known reason and will have them look at it next week. I thought it may be due to my DEF gauge not working but have since found out through here that it is not the case. I then asked about adding DEF and overflowing if I bought a bottle or can??? The service writer assures me that this can't happen. I guess I will find out when my time comes.

I would also check the vent hose on the DEF tank for a kink, I have seen several trucks with vent hose kink causing problem filling DEF tank.

I'll bet that particular retailer has a DEF nozzle with a MFPD.

Most retailers will loan you the magnet at the fuel counter.

Between my '13 & '14, I've probably bought DEF at the pump 20 times or more. My personal experience is that MFPD are not widely used in the areas I'm in.

You would win that bet! That is the nozzle that always gives me fits!

So WTH gives with mine here??

2015 3500 4x4, AISIN, 3.42 gears.

Just did a trip to AZ and back (CO). At 700 miles I was getting 9.3 MPG and used 2.5 gallons of DEF. Same results coming back.
Pulling a 24' enclosed with a Jeep and Harley in it. Only did 75 MPH max in interstate (84 miles max & speed limit) and everywhere else the speed limit.

If you guys are figuring based on what the computer says you have used I wonder how accurate that is. I know in my experience every vehicle I have had with a mileage meter has been wrong, always says it is better then what it really is. My current 08 is about 1.5-2 mpg off, my 03 was 3-4 off.

I think they program them that way to make you feel good
