The Exhaust Brake

So I really like the exhaust brake, really helps with stopping. Overall would it be ok to have it on all the time even for short trips etc...? Does it have an effects on the life of the motor? would it hurt the motor etc...

Thanks for any input.

no it wont hurt. some say it is good to run all the time to help keep soot from building up on the vanes. Some also say dont run it in slippery conditions .

Wouldn't that reduce fuel mileage?
I thought tow haul just kept the tranny from shifting beyond 5th gear.

tow haul just changes shift points and more aggressive downshifts with the EB, doesnt limit high gear like previous years. perhaps there might be a slight mpg loss but i doubt much worth noting.

Does the EB switch turn off with the key? My 5500 will still be on at the next start up. It saves you from having to turn it on with each start up.

I have 3.42 gears, and the 68RFE...5th gear is like an old truck with 4.10's...

Either way, no, it still uses 6th, but shifts firmer, and downshifts farther with the EB. I wish I could get it to shift firmer yet, I was used to a DTT 47RE with 210psi line pressures

Could somebody please explain how the brake works. I understand there is a flip that closes and puts back pressure against the cylinders but some times there is just the noise of the engine slowing down and sometimes there is a loud whisle noise from the turbo. IS this ok. Is the turbo spooling up in the backwards direction to help slow down or what???

just would like to know more about this thanks

The EB uses the Variable Geometry Turbo. Instead of a "flip" closing, it partially closes the nozzle on the exhaust side of the turbo. This has two effects - it increases the backpressure in the cylinders, but it also causes the turbo to spool up due to the increased air velocity through the narrower opening. This second "effect" is actually the main point of the VGT - allows faster spool-up at lower engine speeds. It also explains the whistle - it's just the turbo spooling up. You don't normally hear it so loudly because the engine noise masks it somewhat during acceleration.

HERE is a pretty good explanation of the VGT & nozzle, along with an animated diagram that shows how the VGT setup works.

Does that help?

The "Overdrive" trans tuning from H&S firms up the shifting and gets rid of some the gear hunting. It will be avaiable through a stand alone tuner for the guys that don't want to run a full power/delete tuner.
