Difference between 6 spd auto in 3500 vs 4500?

Hey guys,

From what little I know the auto transmission in the 4500 series Dodge trucks is made by Aisin. And the 6 spd auto in the 2500/3500 series trucks is made by Chrysler--right?

What is the main difference between the 2 transmissions?

I purchased my 4500 chassis with the Aisin automatic and the 4.88 gears. Essentially the truck has the same pulling capacity of the 3500 pickup but you get an upgraded transmission (180,000 warranty), larger brakes, larger gear ratio, etc.... From what I could gather the 68RFE has roughly the same capacity as the Aisin automatic, but the Aisin allows for a power takeoff (PTO) and the 68RFE does not. The Aisin also has a steeper first gear for better off the line power, but thanks to wider ratios, retains the same sixth gear ratio. I was informed that Aisin transmissions were used in most 18 wheelers and they are the largest producer of automatic transmissions in the world. Hope this helps

Probably easier service since most will be fleet vehicles.

The aisin transmission is a better industrial transmission than the light duty 68RFE pick-up truck have.

I stopped at a Dodge Dealer a couple weeks ago and the manager was telling me the 68RFE and the Aisin are the same transmission. I was specifically asking about the 3500 CTD.

A manager? He's wrong. Either honestly wrong or he thinks you're gullible!

He was honestly trying to tell me that. I told him it wasn't the same and told me to google it as that is what he did. I told him 'thanks' and left after that tidbit lol.

And this wasn't in MT.

For 2013 you can get either the Aisin or the 68RFE in the 3500, one thing you get with the 3500 pickup over the 4500 chassis cab is resale.

Question: is the 68RFE a decent transmission, or is the Aisin recommended?

I don't mind the 68rfe in my 2011 but I'm using the H&S transmission tune however we chose the Aisin hands down on my sons 2013, it is just that much tougher and feed back is it's incredible compared to the 2011 G56 with the Southbend 3250 DD clutch he was using, hasn't pulled anything over about 8k yet though.
