well when you look at book time x their labor rate I can see it.

book time for a fuel filter change (and doing it by the book and not just remove cap and install new filter) is .9 hours. The mechanic does not make all of that $90 that they charged him. They are in the business to make money to keep their doors open etc...

you either learn to do your own things or not complain when you have to take it to the dealer

.9 is actual book time. I am not going to sit here and argue with you about it. Not all dealerships have "menu" pricing for such things as fuel filters etc... If their labor rate is $100 an hour and the labor time is .9 then its $90 to change the filter. Take some time and do your research on what it takes to keep a shop open and pay the techs. Techs get paid flat rate. they don't work on a car all day long they made NOTHING. They flag 10 hours in a day then they had a good day.

I get the .9 book time. The top money makers always charge the accurate maintenance time. Those are the guys that provide for their employees. It also has mechs getting tips due to honest trusting consumers.

Example: A good mech that uses all data and has no concern for recommended time gets more work/cash than those bound by prescribed rates.

If you were a mech for me, I would make sure you are paid well. That way I know you will support me and my customers.

Trust me brother this is not directed towards you. This is directed toward business owners that do not take care of their employees 1st.

By the way, my helicopter mechs work 80hr weeks and get paid less than a dominoes delivery boy

I was one of them 1993-2000 (h-1, h53 & h60) (h-1 and 60 maintenance instructor also). I run a shop and I see techs that pull times out of their back sides and I shut them down fast. I also have techs that use book time like its the bible and they do killer work and are good. Have seen both sides and continue to see both sides. I can tell you the ones that pull times from the dark side don't get fed by me because I also don't trust their work. If i were the owner or had the power to DFR (down the "explitive" road) they would go.
