Yea, Another tire question, lol

I was looking at changing all my stock 265's to a set of 5 B.F. Goodrich AT's. I want a better looking tire and a little bigger, but not to big. I was looking to get 285's and mount them all on the stock rims. I got a price for a little over $1,100 for 5 tires mounted and balanced, I thought that was a decent price. I figure its a good size tire to fill in the wells a little without sacraficing power. I looked at a tire calculator to compare the differance in sizes, and it said that the 285's would be 3.5% slower than stock, and at 60 mph, I'll actually be going 62.1 mph.

Is this much of a change to where I should get the speedo re-calibrated?? Will I notice a change in the trans shifting at all, or is this little differance really not a concern?? I figured its really not that big of a change, and Im lucky I'll be towing 5,000 lbs on my heaviest day. Im only doing this because I cant stand looking at these narrow, too small stock tires on these beefy trucks!!

Heres The link to the tire calculator if anyones interested....
Tire Link...

Any info for this question, please let me know.

On another note, Anyone know of a good aftermarket wheel or rim, that is capable of withstanding all year weather, especially winters and road salts?? I have a very bad back, and would love to put a good looking set of wheels on my truck, But I dont want to have to swap wheels twice a year, I dread just changing a tire..( ) So i dont even want to think of doing 8 wheels and 32 lug nuts, twice a year!! Theres nooo way I'd be able to do it.

Well the price seems a little high to me. I paid right at $1,000 for 5 BFG 315s mounted and balanced.

I would advise to get the "Pinion Factor" reprogrammed for the larger tires. It is not a big difference, but it is better to know how fast you are really going and what your mileage really is. The 285/70R/17 is one of the pre-programmed tires the dealer can set easy. I dont really know how much it affects shifts, if at all. But it is part of the ABS programming and I didn't want to take a chance on the brakes not doing what they are suppose to. Just my .02.

I am looking at replacing my 265's with BFG 285's also.

I went to Discount tire a few weeks ago to have my stock ones rotated (for free) and they tried to sales pitch me on some new tires. I was interested in getting my tires replaced, but not that day. Anyway, long story short...they offered me $300 on the spot for my stock tires (27,000 miles) and gave me a real quick quote of $199 each and $10 a piece install. With tax, install fee, and 5 tires it would be almost what you were quoted, minus the credit for the stock tires. So I doubt your price is to far off.

However, WHEN I get ready to do the deal.........I plan to negotiate quite a bit on that price.

Also, I like the 285's from what I have seen. I know lots of guys on here have the 315's....but I just think they look a little to big and out of proportion to the truck.............just like the 265's look to little and out of proportion. I think the 285's are just about right and hopefully won't rob to much power.

I think John Rodriguez mentioned in his dynoing he had lost about 30 RWHP from the 315's over the stock tires.

Personally I think the 315s look perfect for these big trucks BUT so do the 285s. I actually wanted 285s when I was looking to convert from the stockers but they cost double at the time for some reason. Now they run about the same price new, but 315s can still be had cheaply as new take-offs from Hummers. I, personally, would have a very hard time spending $1100.00 for the 285s when I could get the 315s for half that. The price you were quoted sounds about right though. Once you get them on you will be happy. Even the stock 265s look too small!

I called the local h2 dealer, they sold me a set of 4 take offs for $450..rims and 315's, new. I couldnt say no to that deal. I think they look and ride great. I was looking at 285's also, but I like the look of the 315's and the price much better. Check out my pics.

BFG 315/70R/17 All/Terrain T/As and BFG 285/70R/17 All Terrain T/As are "D" rated tires.

Yea, we looked this up at the tire dealer, but the BFG's even though its a "D" instead of an "E" They still had the same weight rating as the stock tires, I made sure of that.

My 285 BFG A/T's

[IMG] [/IMG]

I switched from the stock 265's to 315's and now currently running the 285 BFG A/T's. I am much more happier with the 285's. I think they look good on the truck, they handle my 5th wheel just fine and I get around 20 MPG with them

Hey "HUMP" (thats funny ) Nice pic, thats exactly what I was looking for, to me its a good size tire to make these trucks look better and not sacrafice alot of power. Lemme ask ya, Do you notice a better ride with the BFG AT's on your truck, and do you have any rubbing issues with them on the stock wheels?? Thanks again

The ride is much better with the BFG A/T's than the stock Rugged Trails. Seems to be a softer ride with more cushion and way better traction than the stockers. I have absolutely NO rubbing issues and the A/T's handle my 5th wheel just fine

speedometer calibration

Ok, not sure if this has been covered in any previous threads, but how would a person go about recalibrating the speedometer after switching to oversize tires?

The dealership has to do it... I think there is a box you can buy for about $300.00 or so that allows you to do it yourself too...

Thanx, Dodgezilla,
To be very honest, I wouldn't trust most dealerships to fill up my windshield washer fluid. What's this box you're talking about? Where do you get it?
