Wife wants a truck (48re)

Thinking about getting another truck. Just curious on how the automatic is holding up.

48re

I have 19000 miles on mine, and not one problem. Kinda takes a bit of getting used to, towing with mainly, but once you learn it it's great. I've had the ole 47RE and I like the 48RE much better

If you get it do not Bomb it over 400 hp! JMHO

Tows like a dream 23k on mine now and the only complaint is the squishy shifting at Mach 3 with the race box on full tilt! I'm in process of upgrading the valve body to see if I can make the stock torque converter live a little longer.

The Thrust bearings will wear rapidly if you tow leaving metal shavings in your fluid so keep an eye on fluid changes. I change every 10k miles as I tow 6k daily!

You may want to go with a deeper than stock trans pan to keep the temps low.

Also the lower gear ratio 4.10's will be your better bet for towing but not for mileage. But you can climb any hill anywhere while towing with the 4.10's as they show you a very impressive power to weight ratio.

Just my own 2.5 cents.

Rick

40 K on mine and is going strong. No problems, light to moderate towing.

I towed a bobcat (approx 11K) one time, had it floored coming out of every stop light, busted the tires loose every time with approximately 1,100 lbs. on the bumper! Actually got the tranny to go into "hot" mode or "early lock-up" mode (torque converter locks up early to reduce tranny heat due to converter slippage - nice "save the transmission form the idiot with the heavy right foot" feature). After the tranny cooled down shifting and torque converter lock-up returned to normal, no ill effects to date.

Great tranny.

So far I have had no problems with mine in 35,000 miles. I have towed some with it, including a couple of 12,000lb loads, and it did fine. Have towed lighter quite a bit with no problems. I do change out my fluid and tranny filter every 15K though and added a Mag-Hytec DD Pan and Di Pricol Tranny Temp Gauge.

Saving a few dollars now so I can upgrade with DTT parts. The question is, how far do I want to (can afford to) go with it!

Stock or mildly bombed, I think the 48RE is fine. Over 400hp you probably need some upgrades. But don't tell John Rodriguez I said that.

Haven't had a problem with mine at all. 27k on the clicker now. Only thing I don't like compared to my 1st gens 47re is that I can NOT lock out OD. I hear the 04's & now the 06's can do that. That would be one nice feature to have.

Have done the TC lockup switch and that works super. Seems to help since I really don't tow AT ALL and nice cruising around town easy with the TC locked up. Haven't tested MPG yet using that. Still getting use to when I should hit the button and when I shouldn't.

Better all around tranny though compared to stock 47re.

30k on mine with no issues. Tows great as long as its kept in the right gear to stay within the power band.

I have a customer with an 04' that is a commercial horse hauler. 95% of his miles are pulling. He went 130k before the first tranny service. He now has right at 200k on it and it is still going, never been touched, shifts real good. We have sold a lot of 48re's. So far, haven't done anything to any of them except change fluid and filters as needed, knock on wood.

Most of the complaints I see are related to bombing, not towing. It has been upgraded, and seems to be good if towing within the suggested peramaters.

We've replaced two of them in our shop since they came out in mid 03. I also talked to a guy last week from Canada that had to have one replaced in Reno and had a little over 60K on the odometer. In conversation it was also noted his triple axle 38ft twin slide toyhauler weighs in at around 21,000 loaded. I think it's time for him to step up to a Freightliner. He did agree on that aspect.
