why first 500 miles towing (50 mph)

why first 500 miles towing (50 mph)

ok - new question... why are you susposed to keep the speed to 50 mph for first 500 miles towing???

Break-in. Used to be you had to drive the car that way when you bought it new. Back in the 50's & 60's there was a break in period for every new car. Come to think of it my Harley had a break in period.

Actually that language is misleading. There was a thread about that roughly a year ago. What it means is that if you are towing during the first 500 miles on the truck, you should limit your speed to 50. Once you exceed the 500 mile mark on the odometer, there's no restriction whether towing or not. Hope this helps.

The 500 mile restriction was primarily to allow the ring and pinion in the rear differential to seat (establish a proper wear pattern) before subjecting these gears to the high loads of towing.
