I'd like to have a 4th gen dually in a couple years. But my living arraingments largely controls what I can park. My shortbed quadcab fits in a garage tight but fits. As soon as I get out of this highrise (parking garage) I'll be in a townhome and won't be able to park outside so that is a dilema.

The truck has been trouble free pretty much for over 70K miles now (knock on wood). It's almost paid off as well.

On my wish list is:
-lot of new front end components
-camper/shell
-speakers
-light bar
-cab lights

Maybe I'll get a 5500 work truck in 2013 or something and leave it at work.

If I hadnt been doing this it would have closer to 170K miles. But my daughter will inherit the car in January so I'll need another throwdown car. My wife keeps telling me to drive the truck, its a diesel, they're made for miles. I have to remind her that the newer diesels are way more expensive, have way to many emission requirements, my 5 year old 100k+ mile SLT Ram is worth more than her 3 year old 45K mile Aspen Limited and will still be worth five figures years from now.
I feel you on the second car thing, I don't feel like dropping 50K on a truck every few years.

My current run around car is a Honda Accord. 4cyl/5speed coupe. I like it a lot, it's comfy and has a pretty dang good ergonomic design to it.
When the tires get down to 20% I'm going to sell it and get a Honda Element 4cyl/5speed.

The way things are headed with smog crap and fancy electronics, this will be my last diesel. Good side is that it will take many more years before it is worn out or I am just tired of it. Keeping it stock, I think, will make it last longer. In 5 years, the trucks will be much different than they are today.

If one of my startups takes off I might look at a C&C 3500, 4500 or 5500 for a work truck. But for personal use this might be my last diesel due to cost, emission equipment and other factors associated with today's diesels.

I'm going to keep an eye on Ford's new EcoBoost 3.5L GTDI in the F150's. This could be the bridge needed for gasoline vs. diesel in 1/2 ton vehicles.

Like most everyone else, I'm keeping my 06. I have generally gotten bored of my trucks after three years. I bought my truck new on the last day of 06. Super cheap! 48k miles and I still like it as much as the day I bought it.

FMB, "And then there is the extremely small mark by the front fender's "C" marker where a lady decided she wanted my lane on the freeway. What she ended up with was a broken mirror and a tire tat on her door."
Her first name wouldn't have been Danika, would it?
"(S)he didn't slam you, (s)he didn't bump you,(s)he didn't nudge you... (s)he rubbed you. And rubbin, son, is racin'."

After I git my steering box issue resolved, I will have to think about it. My second steering box in 50k miles is leakin' like a sieve top and bottom. It only has 15k on it. I have to admit that I fall into the "bought a Cummins and got a Dodge with it" crowd. If it wasn't for the small annoying sshhhhhtuff, I would love it.

MikeyB - this is EXACTLY what I'm thinking.... I plan on keeping my CTD for as long as possible, but when it's time to replace, it probably won't be a diesel for the reasons you mentioned.

Purchased my RAM in spring of 2004..
Have made many changes to the truck over the years..
Some that I had to do and others I just wanted to do.
Has been my daily driver since purchase and now has 165k and I will not be selling or replacing with any other truck. I recently purchased a VW TDI that will do most of my daily miles so the mileage will go up much slower on the truck now.

I am very happy with how the truck has treated me. Ball joints would be my biggest complaint. Used Moogs around 100k and then XRF at abount 140k.. Now with 165k I can tell they are almost ready to change again.. I am going to spend the $$ and go with Carli's and see if they are the last ones the truck will need?? Pray for me...

Happy New Year to All!

Love mine too and will be keeping even after the wheels fall off! I'll just put the dynatrac prosteer balljoints in at that point. Oh yeah and it's paid for! More money to keep upgrading!

I liked the simplicity of my 2nd gen 12 valve engine. Wish I could drop one in my 3rd gen.

3rd gen quality seems worse than 2nd gen.

I like the 3rd gen design and some of the features. I like the folding tow mirrors, I mean compared to the stainless steel flip outs that required wrenches to change on the '96...

Guess I'll be keeping what I got and thinking about an engine swap....

Well I'll be keeping my for a long while as well. Can't affort 50k every 3 years. With this thread I think our age is starting to show a little. I too plan on getting a daily driver to take the ware and tear off this truck. Heck it looks brand new in and out so why change.

At almost 59 yrs of age my 05 should last me until I'm dust in the wind. Especally since I only have 23K miles on it since I bought it new. I don't move around much since I traded my 01 in for the 05 & only had 28K on it.

I agree. Here's a reason: IT'S PAID FOR. That's right, I just made the last payment today! I love my 3rd Gen. 70K miles on it with many years to go. 18 MPG all day long, powerful, dependable, and durable. Plus, it just makes sense to pay for it and drive it a while. (I saw a new Ford diesel blowing blue smoke the other day). Don't be that guy.

05 rules

Yeah I had a 96 Dodge 1500. Then I bought a Camper. Told the wife, we need more truck. Getting passed in the truck lane on I-77 up Fancy Gap,(by tractor trailers) not good.
So we find a slightly used 05 in 07 with 9300 miles (kept in the barn) not a scratch on it, and Whoa-Nellie.
No problems on I-77 up Fancy Gap (with camper in tow).
We decided, the camper may come & go but 'Big-D' (we call the truck Big-D) is here to stay! I have always liked Dodge trucks. We don't drive him in the snow, no salt on that frame. we have Jeeps for the snow.

The trickle charger stays on the batteries more these days since diesel fuel has tripped back over $3.25 a gallon, but its so cool to listen to the rattle, Rattle, Rattle. Going to get new shocks this year. He's paid for.
Have a good one!
