Just relax, and enjoy your new truck. If you start thinking you have to do all these little mods, special maintenance and special driving techniques, you may not enjoy it so much. Get to know it, have fun. It's a big, strong thing and there will be plenty of time to see what changes you might like.

I know with the Power Stroke Ford says 10 mile trips or less is "severe service", and that you should change the oil more frequently, so would I be correct in assuming it's the same for the Cummins due to moisture buildup in the crankcase? Don't mean to hijack this thread!!

Welcome, I came from a 96 Powerstroke and have never been happier with a truck. Modding is fun, do the few things to get the whistle and two things will happen, you'll listen to the radio less and your ears will freeze in the winter from hanging your head out the window to listen to it..... sorry tickled myself....

I would recommend gauges early on, especially fuel pressure so you can keep eye on your lift pump which supports the injection pump. I also think some type of fuel additive with the new ULSD is important for smooth, long lasting performance. Have fun.

I agree, a good set of guages are the best insurance you can buy. Also will help you diagnoise problems.

The most important thing is to hook up a big trailer and find some mountains so you can pass all those bigblocks that you couldn't pass before and don't even slow down enough to wave to them! I agree with the other comments - don't hammer on it til it's warmed up, get a pyro and don't shut it off til the turbo is below 300 degrees, change fuel filter often and use lubricity fuel additive. Don't let it set and idle after winter starts - drive it easily til it warms up. Craig

Good point, these trucks are not made to just idle. When you idle, set the high idle and put your tranny in neutral so it will circulate fluid.
