what length garage for ram 2500?
what length garage for ram 2500?
Here is the dilemma...I am building a new house and I need to know if these trucks will fit in a 22ft long garage. I will soon be buying a 05 quad cab, short box, 4x4 auto.
I will be getting a 8ft high garage door, and probably the widest I can (prob 16ft). I shud probably explain that in our city all new homes are built with attached garages on the front. Most house lots are only 36-40 feet wide, with the houses usually being 28 or 30 ft wide.
Our houses are all 2 storey, and mine specifically will be 2300sq feet not including the finished basement. Hopefully this will eliminate those that will suggest to just build a 40 x 30 shop on the property.
I checked the dodge web site and I think my truck is 249 inches long...which is just under 21 feet, but I'm not sure how high it is. I can assume that the standard 7ft high garage door wont cut it though. The standard attached garage is only 19ft wide and 21ft deep, but I can extend it a few feet in either direction...just not sure how much. I assume I cant go over 24x24 cuz I have never seen that big of an attached garage and it will add a huge cost to the house price.
Now that you know my problem, please let me know...those who have a short box, quad cab, 4x4 diesel what is the minimum garage length I will need to park this truck. I will be real upset if my new ride has to sit on the driveway for the next 10 years.
Thx

I'd extend it the most I could, 24X24. I have a Quad Cab Long Box, but my garage is also 29' deep. My truck does just fit in the std. 7' high garage door, however, if I could've chosen, I'd go 8' high.
Not sure if this helps or not, just thought I'd give my .02.
Good Luck

just built my house 2 years ago before my CTD...................
now it has to set outside
My garage is tall enough but its too shallow its 24'x24' and if I touch the back wall with the bumber I can barely get the garage door shut let alone get out of my truck if the wife is parked in there also
the only time my truck is in the garage is if theres a HAIL storm on the way if not its is too much hassel it put it in there
I would of changed my whole house plans to get a 30x30 garage if I knew how small 24x24 seems when somebody else is already parked in there
NO SMALLER THAN 30X30
even if you plan on building an detached garage later on down the road the extra space will not be wasted plus its a cheap way to make your house appear alot bigger than it is ...if you care about that kind of thing.
just facts

No matter how large you build it, in two years you'll wish it was 2' longer and 2' wider. Four years you'll wish for 4'. and so on.
Measure your truck mirror-tip to mirror-tip and then add the width of the doors open enough to squeeze in when you and your wife are 60 years old, is a good template. Make it as handicapped accessible as you can because sooner or later someone’s gonna need to go thru the smaller door with crutches or a wheelchair. Not being morbid, but now is the time to be thinking of worse case scenarios especially in a two-storey.
Oh yeah, and make the driveway apogee long enough so that the incline/decline doesn’t cause the roof of the truck to rub the top of the garage door.

oh man, the problem is I can only go a certain size by code. Having a detached garage is not a option....believe me I wish it was. Not sure how new houses are built down south, but up here for example if my lot is only say 38 feet wide and my house is say 28 feet wide that leaves 5 feet on either side of my house to the property line. I think by code there has to be a minimum of 4 feet on either side of the house to the property line. Obviously if I am extending it wide I now can only go as far as the size of my house ploted on the size of my lot will legally allow.
I may be able to go 24x24 at the very most, and I will probably have to buy a 40ft lot if I can find one. But now it seems like 24ft long is the absolute minimum length that I need.
Gunna give the dealership a quick call to see what they say....thx for the advice so far guys.

well, called every dealer in my city and no one in new sales could say exactly what size garage length is minimum. However what they indicated was that the truck from front bumper to back of cab is 143in. From the back of cab to rear bumper is 84.8. Which totals 227.8in or 18.98 feet. The 249in I originally thought is for the long box.
Sounds like 22ft long is the absolute minimum length which will leave me about a foot front and back. I will try to go 24 ft long if I can, just for the added clearance.

well my truck must of got bigger
I steped off my garage it is 24x24 and I dont have a foot on frount and back
and if you have a foot think about it..................... if you shut the garage door before you get out youll have to plan on witch way you park because you wont be able to walk threw a foot and anybody who parks on the outside cant walk around your truck ....you'll have to pick a side and back it or pull it in witch ever puts your drivers door toward the entry or the house.
and I said that the only thing thats gonna be in my garage was 2 vehicals thats it ............................yeah right that didnt work. so you'll have to climb over all your other toys. also
good luck
I think I'd look for a bigger lot nows the time to get what you want.

a "24X 24" garage will measure just over 23" on the inside as the 24' measurement is always for the outside length. Useable inside space is the outside measurement minus wall thickness on each end, 5" for a 2x4 wall, more if cement blocks as the first course up. Therefore a "24 x 24" will be close to 23' on the inside.
I have a 16 x 8' garage door. Really like the extra 1' of clearance so would recommend it highly.
Son-in-law house was built in 1986 and his attached double garage has a nice 18' x 8' ( yes 18' not 16') double door. That extra 2' wider really makes a difference. If I ever build it'll have an 18' wide garage door before it gets a kitchen! Might want to check this out as an option...

Wow, a 18ft wide door, I'll look into that. And ur right about loosing a bit of interior length. My builder says I will loose 6in at the end of the garage do to the door. Which would put me around 23.5ft long. I wont have much usable space, but at least the truck will physically fit.
Thx for the advice

My Fathers a contractor and having help built and design the last 6 house's we have built on the blue prints all the mesurements are ID (inside dimensions) If you was to draw up a house useing OD (outside dimensions) and then try to build it ..............it would be a mess and by the time you got to the last room you would either have way to much room left or not enough. When you draw up a house you try to do all the mental work at your desk and when your at the site you just glance up at the blue print and measure out the room and start building your interior walls ....haveing to add for the width of each wall would be mind boggaling especially if you have two crews at work
If the garage is drew up 20x20 thats what you have when its done .
There are few contractors who use OD such as land scapers, siding people, and such when it comes to framing its ID all the way .
the width of the interior and exterior walls are added to the overall width of the house for many reasons one being DRYWALL if you figger into full sheets on a wall and just add/subtract a little here in there in the planning stages to accomindate full sheets you'll save the home owner alot of $$$.
IF you asked for a 20x20 and got 19-1/2x20-3/4 somebody screwed up
IF a garage is drew up @ 24x24 when they pour the footers and lay the block the ID of the block is 24x24 and you build from the center of the block so you do gain a few inchs of wall to wall room in the garage but the over all width between the blocks is 24x24
Being upset with my 24x24 Ive successfully talked all our customers sence who were thinking of a 24x24 to go a head and get the 30x30 and having to redesign other parts of there houses to accomendate it.
All our garage doors are 8'
When you get your door I would recommend a SCREW DRIVE door opener they are sweeeeet
And with a 30x30 you can easyly have a 2nd entrance in to your garge so you wont have to keep opening and closing your garage door all the time.
I just bought a house with an attahed 24' x 24' garage (interior size - exterior is 25 x 25). My 2500 fits in easily with about 4' to walk in front of it when parked. My girlfriend's car will park on the right hand side of the garage (Honda Accord) and I'll place my workbench and tools, etc on that side. Given that her car is shorter, there will be plenty of room. I believe the overhead door clearance is about 90" which works out fine - our trucks are 78.5" empty (4x4 QC 2500). I don't see why you would need any more headroom
I live in a really cold climate (last January we had some winter nights that were -40C) and find my truck takes forever to warm up on the 15 minute winter commute, so I plan on insulating the garage R20 in the walls and R40 in the ceiling. I'll add a small space heater, so with the insulated door, I should use minial heat keeping the garage at +5C overnight. Morning warmups should be quicker too.
Now, if I can figure out how to install a floor drain that will connect to the city line (or alternatively to my house's plumbing) so I can get rid of the overnight melting snow - I'm pouring a new garage floor anyway.

My 20' x 20' is 231.5" from wall to door. A 4x4 QC SB 2500 "fits" with 0.5" clearance in front, 1" in the rear, and about 0.75" clearance overhead (w/o cab clearance lamps).
Comical, just comical...

7 Years ago moved into my house with a detached 6 car(40X40) garage. I thought at last heaven, it will never fill up, wrong. It took about 2 years. We have 4 vehicles, 2 in and 2 out the tractor the lawn tools and welding machine, 4 wheeler etc. take up the rest. Point is buy where you have room to expand if you plan on being there awhile. My wife picked out the first house, 2 car garage no room to expand, but close to everything she thought she needed. It took some convincing, but got her to look at other areas, and bought this place. I will be adding a shop in the not to distant future.
