What is this???????

I own a 06 mega cab, 5.9 deisel. I was wondering what the oval shaped thing is on the exaust located under the front pass. seat. It rattles when i shut it off & when i shut the door. I was thinking cat. converter but i didn't know if deisel's had them? Does the rattle have the potential to hurt anything? I have another one on a junk spare truck. Didn't know if i should replace it, replace with a piece of pipe, or leave it alone. Thanks for looking. Chuck

On my 2005 it is the cat converter. Mine, however, does not rattle. If the innards are rattling around it could be causing greater than normal restriction and should be replaced. Some will say just delete it. You should search up the regulations in your state on that.

Make sure it is not loose. Clamp right before it.

Don't throw it away if you remove it.

They have platinum inside.

It wont hurt the truck to remove it, but may come back to bite you in the bee-hind when you go to smog it.

It won't hurt to remove it, and in your case, IF it's the innards all busted up rattling, it may actually help, but it will void your warranty and may not pass inspection. it's a catalytic converter. Just like whats required on all cars now.

You need to verify it's not just in need of a clamp or hanger being tightened or replaced, and if it truly is the innards, replace it.

Depends where your from but here in Texas we just remove em. My cat and muffler were gone the day after I got my truck. Never had a problem with passing inspection or getting warranty work done with it gone. Save it if you take it off though.

If you live in CA you will need to keep the cat as they have started smogging diesels this year and all original smog equip. must be in place.

It's covered under your 100K warranty - if it's rattling, it needs replaced.

Was just looking at prices, gold over 1000 an ounce, Platinum a couple hundred more. Place cat in safe deposit box for family inheritance.
