Wet Carpet Front Passenger Side

We have been having some monsoon rains here in suburban Philadelphia the last couple days. Today is nice, so I decided I'd clean up the truck a bit. When I pulled up the mat from the passenger side front, the carpet was soaked straight across from about the transmission hump, then damp all the way up to the firewall.

I opened the glove compartment, felt underneath the dash, and can't find anything wet. Where is the water coming from? From splashing under the truck and soaking through? (Although I haven't been through any major puddles.) But, I do have one idea. The plastic cowl between the windshield and hood appears warped on the passenger side, and I'm sure water can get down in that opening. I'm thinking that with this really heavy rain, it ran down along the firewall somehow, and under the carpet?

At any rate, I towel-dried the carpet, and let it dry to the open air. I certainly don't want this to mildew out, or rust out the floorboard. Any ideas? Would the plastic cowl be a warranty item?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Scott

do you have the "hutterite" roof lamps?? ( you know the orange clearance lights?) cause mine was doing the same thing and i couldn't figure it out for the life of me, untill i was drivin and it rained like crazy!! it was pouring in where the passenger sun visor clips in beside the overhead console. when i got home had a peek and sure enough the center and the next one on the pass side both had cracks from being overtightened , they where $9.95 each and fixed my water prob, hope works for you.,

Chris, this was the first thing I thought of, because I have a dually, and have those lamps. I know from reading these forums that they can leak - but mine never have. I check the headliner and b pillar, and I am not detecting any wetness.

This is a really mystery.

my headliner was never wet either, but the base of them is fiberglass and wont absorbe, and mine driped through the clip ( not sure the thech term) that the visor "clips" into, and i never saaw wetness there either .can ya put a hose to it ( spray with water?) the lights and see if you get dripping? i would put the hose to the cowling area too and see if you can see anything.
best of luck.

Thanks Chris. I will try that. The other thing is, the TOP of the mat was not wet. I didn't notice anything until I pulled the mat up, and the carpet was soaked underneath - so the water is definitely coming from UNDER the carpet.

maybe is going traveling down your winshield pillar? my srt is in the garage and i had a good look at that and it seems the firewaqll area is enclosed, but i'm not sure about the vented area in the middle though. could be some crud in the kick panels and not allowing water to drain?? but if your having monsoon rain your ride is getting it from all kind of crazy directions. good luck with that.

Great minds thing alike! You know how these trucks LOVE to trap crud and leaves (and driving the roads around here lately is like driving through a compost pike), and my door gaskets are caked with 'em.

I'm thinking also it might be running down the pillar on the inside. I just went outside and looked at my clearance light. No cracks, and the *seem* sealed VERY tight to the roof.

Next time we get a heavy rain, I'm going to go get in the truck on the passenger side, and see if I can chase it down.

Yikes, how would I even see that? How did you get in there to seal it?

Check the blower motor. On some vehicles there is a foam gasket around the blower motor and water often gets through. I put in windshields for a living and have racked my brain on more than one blower motor gasket problem!

I had a leak on the passenger side, which took the dealer four or five times to find and fix. It was evidently a seam on the front of teh cab that needed to be resealed.

I had wet carpet on the passenger side on my 99 dually ( or was it my '02 -- no matter). It only occured when it was hot and humid (a/c weather). turned out to be my evaporator drain -- pointed straight out the firewall and while going down the road, turbulance would push condensate back around drain right into the cab. Cured it with an elbow to point the drain down.
