Welding on Frame

I just read that we can weld on the frame with good welding practices.
What do you say.
Thanks

As long as you weld it correctly there should be no problem. I welded my running boards to my frame about two years ago and haven't had any problem. The brackets are welded almost the hieght of the frame. The longer the weld the better. You dont want to put a lot of stress on one area of these hydroformed frames by using short welds (for running boards anyway). My runing boards are about 120lbs each side (steel daimond plate) and I can jump on them anywhere and they don't budge and the frame is fine. It probably helped stiffen the frame a bit if anything. I've got pictures of my boards in my gallery.

I heard that anytime you drill or weld on the frame that it completely voids your warranty.............not sure if it's true but that's what I've been told. My dad had to get a frame clamp kit for his 5th wheel on his 05' Dodge because they said he couldn't drill the frame..............

you can drill and weld on the frame, but you do need to follow the instructions given by dodge. you can't have the holes too close together and you can't weld or drill on the flanges [top/bottom] only on the webs [sides]

[and i can't find my copy of the service bulliten to give numbers...]

Make sure that you are using a good wire feed welder, with .030 or .023 wire size, argon/co2 mixture (c-25 gas) and wire rated at ER70S-6. Dodge does state that you can use ER70S-3, but most body shops do not use it much.

I really would not recommend any arc or stick welding on the hydroformed steel.

I-Car repair proceedures allow for welding on the hydroformed steel.....just in specific locations. You could check with them for the exact locations.

Good luck
