weird one

Bought a boat the other day. We use the heck out of it. only problem is every time I back the boat into the water it blows the reverse light fuse, I figured no problem I would start unpluging the trailer before I back the boat into the water. It still blows the fuse. Its almost like the reverse light is going to ground in the water. Anybody have any ideas or explanations??

My boat has hydraulic surge brakes, but does your trailer have electric brakes? If so there is a reverse circuit that disables the trailer brakes when in reverse. If not may want to rewire the whole thing with new lights, water & 12 VDC do not make a nice environment. FYI, I always unplug the trailer before inserting into water and make sure trailer drip dry before pluging back up.

Check the white wire on your trailer lights, this should be your ground. The white wire on the trailer should be connected to the frame of the trailer and the white wire on the truck side should go to the frame of the truck. Sound like the wiring on your truck got messed up somewhere.

Thanks for the comebacks. The truck has the factory tow package, wiring seems to be in perfect condition, will look at the white wire this weekend after I go fishing tonight. Also, the truck doesnt touch the water . Remember it blows the fuse with the trailer lights unpluged, thats why I say its like the truck goes to ground when the trailer touches the water.

So it looks like your truck has a wire wrong. Check the voltage between the trailer and the neutral on the truck, something is wrong. The good thing is that it is repeatable. Put it in the diveway, clamp a wire to the trailer (to bare metal) and clamp a wire to the truck ( yes bare metal) and see if you still blow a fuse. Now something repeatable, pull the fuse that blows and trace it back. Seperate (sp) it , is it the trailer or the truck.
