Weak Power Steering
Weak Power Steering
See sig for my truck's description. Basically, in the past 6 months or so I've noticed the power steering has gotten weak. Cold, warm or hot - can't hardly turn the wheels at all when I'm at a dead stop unless I'm on a non-paved surface. The fluid level is fine. That's all I have done so far - check the fluid level.
I have 65k miles and have owned it for about a year and a half. Power steering worked great when I first bought it with ~50k miles. I dread a pump replacement. Hoping there's an easier fix. Thanks.

I know someone with an '03 who has replaced his power steering fluid pump 3 times already.
His truck has about 80k miles on it.
You may want to have it checked out.

I have noticed the same thing on mine. I know this may seem obvious but what tire pressure are you running? I notice a big difference in mine from when I normally keep 45psi in the tires to when I have tried 55-60psi in them. I think it may just be enough with mine to help the apparently underdriven pump. I don't know if it is possible but maybe an overdrive pulley is needed for a permanent solution if the pump is not FUBAR. My .02
Having the same problems, it's like I don't have power steering when I am sitting still. Is this covered under the powertrain warranty? I am outside of the 3/36, so I'm gonna guess this is all out of my pocket.

I hopped in my truck sunday morning and turned the wheel to get out of the driveway and had a whine from the pump , it finally went away today when my brother borrowed the truck and the shaft broke. Both it and the pulley popped out of the pump, luckily he was idling and shut it off quickly. So I guess I know what ill be doing this week. My truck is 04.5 4x4 and the whinning noise wasnt there saturday. I ended up changing it out tonight and it wasnt to bad with the inner fender removed.
So whats the cost of the pumps and the best place to get them mine is on the way out. Cant turn the wheel when stoped from time to time.....
Think it needs a pump. It was a PITA on the 96 CTD maybe this will not be so bad on the 03......65 k on no way to get it covered under 7/70 powertrain ?
Its a pump on the motor........Part of the powertrain/driveline....

My truck does this too. Not enough power when not moving - still possible to steer but much harder. However, in the trucks defense, I think the wheels are just very hard to turn when not moving. Mine leaves black tire marks all over the driveway if I dry steer it - evidence it is taking a lot of power turn those wheels side to side when not moving. As far as I am concerned, it's a reminder not to dry steer and p*ss the wife off with black circles all over the drive. Plus I don't think this is all that good for your alingment either doing this all the time.
but remember that your brake booster is tied to the power steer pump and as your pump goes so does the brakes. I have seen the pump go out and you loose the power booster, makes it hard to stop a truck and trailer.
Thats why I ask cost to replace and time? Can you get it covered under 7-70?

I think that the 7/70 only covers internal parts in the drive train. It isn't part of the drive train or an internal part of the engine so I'd say probably not covered. Your pump runs anywhere from 50 to 110 depending on what pump and were you get it and a core of 25 to 40. I'd also check to make sure your hoses have no obstructions in them (IE inner liner come loose and in a wad inside the hose). Be sure to clean / flush the system out very well as it may have metal inline. Would be bad to only have to replace the new pump soon because of metal in the lines.

a couple points of interest you all need to think about.
1. with larger than stock tires ona hydroboost brake system, if your foot is on the brake and you are at idle, most of the pressure and volume of steering fluid is being used by the brake booster, and little is flowing to the gearbox to steer. For those with this problem, when you notice this happening try giving it gas and/or putting it in nuetral and see if it goes away or gets better. If so, the pump is fine, you are just taxing the system at a stop.
2. HB units have a small "reserve cylinder" mounted on the side of them that maintain pressure incase the ps pumps goes out on you. Typically you can get the rig either slowed down or stopped, but there isnt a whole lot of reserve in there, so I would make sure you down shift a ton too.
