Voltmeter question
Voltmeter question
On my 05 I have noticed that the volt meter doesn't quite indicate as high as it used to. If the gauge is viewed "straight on" it shows even with mark in the middle. Prior the gauge would show a little bit past the middle marker. Of course I don't have a voltmeter, but tomorrow I am going to bum one and see where it is. What voltage is normal on an 05 and where is the best place to check the voltage?
Thanks,
Sam

You could also try putting a charger on the batteries overnight. This should raise the level on your voltmeter which would verify that it is functioning properly. Are you doing anything with your electrical system that would drop the voltage?? (constant low rpms, AC, extra lights, stereo power amplifiers, plow controls.......?)
The alternator charges at different rates at different temperatures. There are battery temp sensors under the batteries that "read" the battery temps and adjust the amount of charging voltage.
In other words stop looking at the guage and drive.

The factory gauges aren't all that accurate anyway. My fuel guage will stay on empty for ever. I've also read that the oil pressure guage is useless as well. I guess we should be glad they don't have stock egt guages.
Normal charging systems
Most 12VDC automotive systems will be at 14.3 VDC with the alternator charging (turn off all unnecessary items) and the battery at full charge. If you are reading the voltage across the battery and the vehicle has not been running for a few hours (the battery has had a chance to "rest"), the voltage should be around 12.42 (2.07*6). And yes, you will need a good digital meter to read voltages at this level. Try to get a Fluke if you are going to buy one. They are really inexpensive these days and well worth the money. - John -
