Trailer turn signals reversed
Trailer turn signals reversed
Hi, I'm having this problem and can't find a similar thread.
Basically when I plug into my dads 5T trailer with the 7 pin connection the turn signals on the trailer are reversed, but not on the truck. So left on truck is right on trailer. Mine is an 06 and my dads 04 does the same thing. But on his chevys, and i think his 07 dodge it works fine. Any ideas what this might be coming from? I'm going to pick it up tomorrow evening and the last time i pulled it at night just didn't use signals which sucks.
So if it isn't a common thing maybe i'll just try swapping the pins and swapping them back. Any ideas?

I've seen this quite a bit. Usually a factory truck is right (but not always). Normally what happens is some guy wires up his truck wrong with aftermarket wiring. Then plugs his trailer in and it's mixed up. He is "sure" that his wiring is right so he wires the trailer "correctly". Then the trailer is passed down the road to someone else who actually has their truck wired right but now the trailer is wrong. If you know the trailer is correct then a wire probably got crossed somewhere down the line. But I'd try to verify it by hooking up to another truck that hasn't been affiliated with this trailer in the past to double check.
Here's the correct way "ALL" vehicles 7-way connectors should be wired.

If every vehicle was wired this way then you could plug any male plug into any female receptacle and it would work correctly. As mentioned above though people will hook their towed to their TV and "make" it work by changing wires on either the towed or the TV. I myself have been guilty of this in the past.

Well I guess I'll check my plug. Mine is used but seemed hardly used, was towed with, but the 7 and 4 plug are factory. My dads was a new vehicle and his 07 is too. But like said above all vehicles with 7 way connectors should be wired the same so any trailer will work like it supposed too.
Not sure on the origins of the trailer. We've had it for a long time. Could be wrong, but not sure why it would work right with other trucks. All his chevys were bought new.

So heres what my diagram looks like. Not verified by wire color, i put a meter on it but my meter is not doing to well. It seems the turns are wired up like they should be. But according to this the tail, brake is reversed, which is strange cuz they work fine. only the turns are opposite. So maybe its the trailer. Or dodge, i dunno.

I had a problem like this when using a 7 way to 6 way adapter. My old adapter worked fine and a brand new adapter didn't. I tried to rearrange the wires in the adapter but it caused more things to not work. Finally we fixed a loose connection in the 6 way plug in the bed so there was no need for that adapter.

Worked on my Uncle's trailer a few weeks back. Something similiar to what you're saying. If wired correctly, left turn didn't work; then you could swap the wiring and both turns would work, but were opposite. This was happening plugged into his '97 and my '07. Finally told him it had to be something in one of the trailer lights (left), he wanted to upgrade to LEDs anyway. Sure enough, we installed the new ones, wired the plug correctly and everything worked fine using either truck.
