Tow mirror removal?
Tow mirror removal?
Hey guys, I rubbed up a against a fence with my mirror. It pushed the mirror up, about a 1/2 inch. How do I remove it and reinstall it properly? I removed the cover off the bottom of the mirror and there is some kind of clip? Where do I go from here?
Someone posted very good instructions awhile ago, maybe a year. If I remember correctly, for a 2006, you need to loosen up the interior door panel enough to reach the three nuts attached to the mirror bolts. There are a couple tricks, like you don't need to remove the panel completely, just enough to wedge it out of the way.
Yes, that would remove the entire mirror as one piece. My arm has become loosely seperated from the actual piece that mounts to the door. Now, it doesn't lock into position. For example, if you were to swing your mirror in to keep from hitting something, and then you moved it back to its original position, there would be a hard notch that you would feel once it fell into place. That notch is missing on mine, it swings real loosely and won't stay in place. This keeps me constantly adjusting my mirror and its a real pain. I dont think there is anything broke, its just to loose. So how do I seperate the arm from the actual piece that mounts to the door?
I think they do seperate....I just haven't found the correct way. Maybe i'll stop by the dealer Monday and see if they have any advice. I thought surely somebody would have done this on this forum. There's a lot of knowledge on here.

There is a funky lil washer that holds them together. There was a recall on some non tow mirrors one year. The recall part included a j-bolt affair to hold the mirror together after they came apart.Have fun it is doable and most likely easier to work on if you leave it attatched to the door
When I replaced my left mirror on week one of ownership I took the old one apart just to see the way it was assembled. When you remove the little circular plastic cover from the under of the arm you should see a brass colored locking sleeve, this needs to slide down the column compressing the spring underneath to tighten up the mirror. There is also the possibility that the plastic ridges that lock the mirror into its various positions have been destroyed. Yes, these mirrors have a plastic on metal friction joint that holds the mirror arm either in or out, if you fold you mirrors in and out a lot…it will wear.
Hope this helps.

I have removed the circular plastic piece and I see the stud with some sort of washer or something. Its not a nut on the stud, so how do I remove it? I think I need to remove it to realign the plastic and metal ridges.
I would not try to take it apart as the spring is under a lot of tension. When I took my old one apart, I bent the tabs on the locking sleeve (washer with tabs) and the spring blew the whole assemble apart.
From what I remember…your best bet is to compress the joint then press the locking sleeve (washer with tabs on it) down onto the column.
I just went out to the garage to try reassembling the arm (less spring) and it went together nice and tight in less than a minute. I used a very large socket to drive the washer on. I’m sure that adding the spring into the picture will make this much more difficult.
