Thinking of buying.........but.............

We're in a bit of a quandry. My wife is recently returned to the expensive world of horses and has decided that her 2002 Acural 3.5 RL is not quite the utility vehicle that she thought it would be hauling saddles, bridles, and horsey stuff around.

So....being the proud owner of a 2001 CTD, I suggested we go look at the 2004 Quad Cab, 4x4, CTD, short wheel base. That way it would be a Cummins and still fit in the garage! She LOVED the truck. Of course, I'm getting giddy just thinking about having my hands on two, count em, 2 Cummins in my family. (Maybe my 7 year old daughter would like one too ) The dealer was an ***. Earnhardt's here in Mesa, Arizona. I purchased my first one from them 2 years ago and was able to get it at invoice. No dealing at all this time. Complete jerks. $1000 over invoice after the rebates and all that was as low as they'd go.

My dilemma is this...the Acura will be completely paid off in May. Fine. What about this EGR stuff they're coming out with on the CTD? What's the dealio with that? Is it a definite this year, 2004, model run presence? Should I wait? My plan is to sell the Acura outright, but I'm concerned about the EGR pros/cons.

Also, I've heard a few dealers names mentioned on other websites, but can't remember them that are good for invoice or under pricing. If you can remember them and are willing to help me out, thanks.

Thanks in advance.

Toby

Toby, I can let you know about my guy here in Kansas. I was talking to him the other day and asked if he wanted to sell another truck for the same deal as mine and he said "Yes I need to sell trucks."

Where I bought my truck will offer straight up $500 UNDER invoice on all ordered 04's. (I got my 03 for $1K under invoice minus $4800 in rebates). The price off invoice might be less or more for in stock trucks. I know it's no where near (in Maryland) you but it is a price to go on. I would go for something along those lines.

Go back to Earnhardts, and ask for Dex, in fleet. Tell him Bill Courtney sent ya. He'll cut you a straight deal with no monkey business.

Don't forget to join the Farm Bureau 30 days ahead of time, that $500 rebate will help pay for those 315's that look so good on our trucks.

I didnt buy from them but Steve White in Hickory, NC sells at invoice and you get half the hold back. They also say they deliver free. Check them out.

Also, I traded my F250 for this truck and emailed about 10 dealers within 100 miles radius and the highest tradin won. I get the 1% under invoice where I work so it really didnt matter who I bought from. You might wanna try this approach.

Good luck!

When I bought my truck I checked a zillion dealers in five states. The best deal was at LaGrange Dodge in LaGrange,Tx. They have also proven to have the best service of any place I have dealt with. Call them at 888-891-jeep. Tell them Stan from Mexico sent you.

I'm the proud owner of a new 2004. Now, I've got "twins."

2004 QC, SWB, HO, 48RE Auto, 4 x 4, White, Premium Cloth, Light Group, Protection Group, Trailer Tow Group, Flat Storage Rear Seat, Shift on the Fly 4WD, Anti-Spin Differential 3.73, Fog Lamps, Infinity CD, Leather Steering Wheel w/ audio controls, Power Adjustable Pedals.

I got it for $200 under dealer invoice before the rebates. Not too bad. I used the "I can drive to NC, Texas, or Kansas and get $600 under invoice" line and it worked.

Thanks guys.

I guess now, I'll have to start paying attention in the 3G columns as well.

My wife (her truck now) says no modifications yet, but I'm working on her! :

Thanks Jason. I can't pry it out of my wife's hands. She won't let me drive when we're going out together. , it sucks sitting on the passenger side. It's lonely over there..............

Re:Thinking of buying.........but.............

Hi guys,

Not to be ignorant, but how are some of you getting trucks for *under* invoice---you mean under dealers' cost? I don't see how dealers could sell them that way and stay in business. I thought I was doing good when I got my first CTD Ram for $150 *over* invoice.

Speaking of which, where's the best place online to get an accurate invoice price? I've tried a couple of sites and it seems like I've come up with some different prices for the same stuff. I'm interested, because as of today I'm officially truck hunting!

Thanks.

Re:Thinking of buying.........but.............

Invoice is not the true dealers cost. The dealer would like you to think that’s the case but in reality there are other factors involved. Dealers get additional money from the manufacture for each unit sold. If I remember correctly it can be anywhere from 2 to 7 percent depending on the unit sold.

You can get a rough idea of the invoice price at www.kbb.com, or just ask to see the invoice of the truck you’re looking at. Some dealers won’t show the invoice or worse yet doctor it up. If they won’t show the invoice, walk away. If there invoice is way off from your kbb.com invoice, walk away.

Re:Thinking of buying.........but.............

There is a thing known as dealer holdback, which for a Dodge is 3% of MSRP. So, for a $40,000 MSRP truck, it would be around $1200. This goes right into the dealer's pocket, the owner, not the salesman when they sell at truck. So, if you're getting it "below" invoice, you're cutting into that $1200 that the dealer gets and the salesperson gets zippo, nuddin, nada. That's why they're so finicky about getting that low. I've always purchased off the lot, because they've always had a great selection of trucks and I was able to find one that suited me. I've always been lucky enough to find one that had only been sitting on the lot 2 to 3 days. Check the date/build sticker on the driver's side door that'll give you a date as to when it was built. I don't think you'll be able to find a sticker that has when it was delivered to the dealer's lot, but you can interpolate from the build date. With that in mind, it's a teensy weensy bit easier to get as close to invoice as you can, as they don't have to pay interest on the truck sitting on their lot for months at a time. Kinda the same principal upon ordering one - it comes in and goes right to the customer and everybody gets paid quickly, so less interest is paid out.

I've used kbb.com, edmunds.com, and even the dodge website (although it sucked) to show invoice pricing. I even used the dealer's website for invoice pricing here where I bought mine from.

I first shopped, they flat out lied (imagine that) and told me that their invoice price was a price that was really $600 over the invoice - conveniently $500 over what I'd told them I would pay for it. I guess they thought I was stupid. Then, I got mad and told them I would now only pay $200 under invoice. 3 days later they called back after I emailed every single dealer in the Phoenix metro area (including them) and laid out my terms.

That's what I did. I feel good about it whether or not it was the "best" deal in town, I dunno.

BTW, averaged out the Dodge invoice pricing is really close to 88.36% of the MSRP. I brought my calculator and offered several times to show the salesguy on the internet where I was getting my numbers from. Amazingly, he never ponied up a computer to let me show him. :
