Ladies and Gentleman,
I've got an 06 with the Infinity system (no navigation) and recently the driver's door speaker blew out, just makes fuzzy sounds now. From what I've researched these trucks have an amplifier behind the dash that powers the speakers up front, but not the rears? The front door speakers are 6x9s and only play low/mid range frequencies, and the 3.5" tweeters in the dash play the high frequencies. I've got a few questions that I need some clarification on:
1. Can I just replace the door speakers with a set of normal 6x9 speakers? I understand that because of the factory amp/crossover in place that the built in tweeter on a normal 6x9 will essentially be there just for show and not produce any sound.
2. Can I buy a set of component 6x9s and just use the new components in the doors and not use the crossover or tweeters that will come with the new speakers? Will the factory amp/crossover power these so they sound as good or better than factory?
3. If I decide to replace/upgrade my factory head unit will I be bypassing the factory amp/crossover all together? Is that going to give me better sound than I currently have or will I have to install a new amplifier and run all new wires to the speakers?
Thank you all for the help

I won't be of much help regarding your technical questions since 2003 models differ from 2006 models. My suggestion is to contact Crutchfield and they should be able to hook you up with the right components. You can choose to bypass the amp which means running new wire to the existing speaker locations or you can utilize the existing amp with the proper harnesses/adapters. The Metra site may help as well, but they did initially steer me in the wrong direction on the harnesses required.
If you decide to do a new head unit, select one with wireless Android Auto and Car Play. This will allow you to use your phone wirelessly for media and will turn your head unit into a nav system using Google Maps off your phone. If you have an older phone, you can still use the features with a wired connection. You should also consider an integrated back up camera into the head unit. This was the most beneficial part of the installation for me. I did a write-up on my installation HERE if you want to take a look. But remember the 2003 system is wired differently than the later models.
Best of luck,
Mike.
