Talking Stereo questions for the masters

I have an 04.5 with the infinity sound system. I love the way it sounds. my question is how big are the front speakers. I have a set of brand new Pioneers that I took out of a hotrod we had. these are pretty good speakers. 225 wats max. they are 6and 1/2 inch two ways. would it be beeter to have these speakers that came with the truck or no. I am happy with the sound but these speakers were just lying around and I thought if they were better than than stock i would throw them in. so please let me know what you think. thanks guys

The stock speakers in my 01 are 6x9 in the doors and 6 1/2 in the rear. Not sure about the new ones. The stockers will sound better than a lot of aftermarkets as long as you don't get silly with amplifiers and what not, use a crossover if you do, and route the lows to some decent subs.

The dash speakers are 3 1/2"
The front doors are 6"X9"
The rear doors 6 1/2"

You should be able to fit the 6 1/2" in the front door with a little work (i.e. maybe minor cutting, bracketing, drilling, etc).

As far as replacing your stockers goes, that is up to you. You have a lot nicer system than I do in mine, so that's hard to say without hearing it. If the stockers rattle, distort, or just aren't clean/loud enough when you have it at your preferred volume level, then I'd look into upgrading, otherwise, leave it stock. Remember, the end result of those Pioneers is also gonna depend on what's feeding them too... the stock head unit/amplifier. What I'm trying to say is that different speakers might not make that big of a difference when the rest of the sound system remains the same, unless of course they are a LOT better than the Infinities.

IMO, if you love the way it sounds, like you said, then I wouldn't mess with it. It's a pain to get door panels off these things and I don't know if it would be worth it for a marginal upgrade. I guess it's like they say, if it ain't broke... don't fix it!

Hope this helps!

They may be too deep too. It takes a real shallow speaker to fit in the front door. I could not fit 6 1/2" Infinity Kappa's in my front doors without a little help of some spacers...

thanks for the quik reply. i dont think i want to cut the doors at all. so maybe ill try to put them in the rear doors. your probably right about if it aint broke dont fix it......... but i cant leave it stock. i need to do these other projects to keep me away from the computer chips. haha. they might not work because they are pretty deep, the magnets are huge. I dont really understand car audio but I do understand nice speakers are not anything without some power going to them. i just thought because this system is amplified it might me sufficent. how do you get the door panels off anyway? and on a side note what is the stock infinity radio worth? thanks guys

Like cquestad said, the depth might be an issue... Crutchfield has some great info as to what speakers fit in all the stock locations. They will give even you the depth too. Check out this link...

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-GgqARc9...id=16960&cc=01

You will see the best fit (factory sizes), then the alternate sizes that you can install as well. The alternate sizes have an orange square that says "fit P" click on the 6 1/2" link and it will give you fitment instructions for many different models. Check the magnet for a model #, then I would look to see if your Pioneers are listed... depending on your speakers, it could require a lot of mods, or be as simple as popping in an adapter.

Not sure about removing the 3rd gen door panels, as I have yet to yank mine, so maybe someone with experience with this model can chime in here...

Undo the one screw by the handle and one by the mirror (in front only) and tug up vertically. The are "hooks at the bootm and top. Don't pull out or something will break. It is a vast improvement to the "old" snap keepers...

In my 2nd gen, the Infinity speakers were each fed with audio signal and 12V power because each one had its own tiny amplifier. I trashed the lot and it was a big improvement, but I also added +-1000 watts of amplification, a crossover, a Sony ES-DSP head unit, a 10CD changer and I built a custom layed fiberglass sub enclosure for two JL audio 10W6s under the back seat. (What can I say, sound systems are what I do. )

I'm not sure but it's likely that the new Infinity system powers its speakers the same way. If it does, then the most important addition for you, if you do switch the speakers, would be a good stout amp. (Sub/subs would be good, too. ) If you don't plan to add an amp for your Pioneers, leave the stockers in.

$0.02. YMMV

Rear door is 5 1/4, not 6 1/2.

The factory Infiniti amp in the 3rd gens is a multichannel amplifier.
It has seperate outputs for each of the 7 speakers. These are not normal amplified outputs though. They are crossed over and equalized.

What this means is this amp is built to run these speakers in this truck and thats it. The 6x9's in the doors are low passed. The only play the lower octaves (~200hz and down). The dash speakers are high passed, meaning they play the top end (~200hz and up). The rears are also high passed. What this means is if you switch out any speakers that have different operating peramaters than stock, it's going to sound worse. For example, the 6x9's play only bass. If you were to install the Pioneers instead, they will still only play the bass. Now you have a speaker that was designed to play ~100hz to 20khz playing 20hz to 200hz. Not what it was meant for. If you really want to upgrade the system, you need to bypass the factory amp with an aftermarket amp and then upgrade the speakers.

You could however put the speakers you have in the rears. They will fit and the outputs running them are setup for that type of speaker (thats what the factory puts in there, just lower quality).
The amount of difference you will hear is going to be so minimal though, its probably not worth it.

Hope I was able to help.
