Steering Problems

A month or so I posted the same question about having problems with the powersteering on my truck. The dealer has replaced my steering gear twice in less then 6,000 Miles and I took it in again today for the same problem. How about it, anyone here have the same problem or is it just my truck?

My steering is near perfect. I had a pull to the right for a while and after a few atemps from the dealer I talked them into replacing the tie rod end at pitman arm and they replaced left upper ball joint. Been near perfect since. That was 23000 miles ago I have 46k on it now . I put the 285s on at around 30k and rotate them every 4-5k. These trucks drive and handle like sports cars a huge improvement over the 2nd gens and the other brands. What is your truck doing to be getting steering gears replaced?

When I turn the wheel it turns fine for about one and a half turns then gets real stiff like the power steering pump is running out of of pressure. The dealer has replaced the steering gear twice and now they are telling me that it is the big tires.

I don't pick it up until next week, so I will put the stock tires and wheels back on and try that. I can't believe that the powersteering pump can't turn those Hummer wheeles and tires. I have had big tires on my trucks for thirty five years +- and I know a lot of people on this board are running the same set up as I am with no problems, so who knows....

I had a similar problem on a car at work (not Dodge). When steering was near full lock and turning the PS would actually cut out and virtually kick the steering wheel out of your hands. First we thought the spool valve in the rack was bad...replaced the rack...WRONG! Turned out it was a bad pump that was indeed running out of pressure at certain conditions. Since the first one we have actually had a rash of this problem on the same model.

It can easily be diagnosed on the Rams likely by hooking in a PS pressure guage set and duplicating the problem. If there is sufficient pressure then pump is not at fault but if there is a lack of pressure it may be time for new pump.

I never changed the tires back to stock. I figured that either it would work or not so ***. It works good enough so I will wait and see if anything quits or not.
