Question Squeaky Brakes

I can't tell which brakes are squeaking, the front or the rears. Does anyone else have squeaky brakes that drive them crazy too ? If so, how did you fix them?

Mine are starting to squeek also. Haven't tried to find the culprit yet.

I barely have 6000 miles on the truck and the brakes squeak . I have never owned a vehicle that the brakes squeaked. I have heard that the rear brakes wear out faster then the fronts, which makes no sense to me.

Lubricate the caliper slides, the flat mating surfaces were the calipers move in and out, i just use a few drops of synthetic oil on each about once every 5-8k

I could be wrong but I believe it has to do with how hard you are using the brakes. I tend to be use the brakes lightly when empty. When it gets warmer the brakes will squeak untill I start towing the boat. After a boat trip, my brakes stay quiet for a while. After a few weeks or so I may start hearing a little squeal when braking real lightly. During the summer we are rarely home for more than 3 weeks so I don't know how long it takes to get the full torture back . I believe since the truck has all that stopping power the calipers (sp) are not pressing hard enough and vibrate slightly when empty. May want to brake harder when empty for a day or two (like many knockleheads around here with cell phones to their ears) Just a thought.

That is so true . My braking is unloaded and light, but when I mash hard on the pedal the squeaking goes away. I might try lubing the calipers like Rick-D suggested.

The squeak you are experiancing is largely due to the fact that you have not used your brakes hard and the pads have glazed a hard surface on them. This is promoted by a dusty enviorment, dirt road etc. There are products that are applied behind the pad and act as a buffer so the squeal in not reasonated and audible. (Almost like a rubber mat)
If your caliper sliders are not freely moving as designed, this will cause pad drag ever so slightly and also cause the pads to glaze, and squeal.

My brakes squeak badly also. IT DRIVES ME NUTS. I pulled the wheels and the pads are good, so I cleaned em up with brake cleaner and they still squeak. I hate squeaky brakes

Most quiet brake pads as a rule are factory."Brakes" squeak due to sand/grit in a pad, glazed rotor or pads, sticking slides etc.The REAR brakes wear faster on lots of 4 wheel disc brake systems. The rear pad is a differant compound then the front and the rear pad is smaller also.

Do a visual check and then let them squeak.

pull the pads out and put a 1/8 inch shamfer on the leading edge and trailing edge of the pad,9 times out of ten that fixes it
