sleeper

a random thought popped into my head, anyone turn their back seat into a "sleeper cab"? how would you do that? Im talking just the back seat of a quad cab (yes it would be cramped) but I could really use something like that from time to time. almost like just taking a piece of plywood and building some legs on it to stabilize the side that hangs over the seat, then throwin down a sleeping pad or something.

stupid?

Do you have the fold flat floor, you could put a piece of ply on that and use a sleeping pad and a bag. Or tilt the seat up and then put a piece of ply down with support where needed... Stupid? I don't think so, not if you need a spot to nap.

I dont have the fold flat floor, but your right, folding the seat up and basically making my own isnt a bad idea either. more stable at least.

I looked inside one at the dealers the other day, I was really surprised at how big those things are! I had never seen the interior before.

but, alas, I am stuck with the quad cab.

They are huge, only problem, no factory long bed. I didn't know about nor could I afford the long bed conversion

so I think the best bet is plywood for the sleeping surface, but I am wondering if 2x4's or 2 3/8" pipe cut to fit would be best for the supports.

the question is, what would be the best way to make the supports detachable? for the pipe method, I was trying to find a base that I could attach to the plywood and then just slide the pipes in and out when assembling, what would those base plates be called? I couldnt find anything at home depot. same for the 2x4's.

looks great...I'd like to see one in person...I'm sure, however, that it probably costs a pretty penny

I don't have one of those sleeper setups, either, and don't have a use for one. I've kept that link in my favorites for a while because I've tried convincing my father (who does alot more longer runs than I do) to put one in his truck, though he refuses to do that unless he gets a service body built with boxes all along the sides so he can clear out all the stuff he keeps in the back seat. Anyway, i digress.

I've been tossing around the idea of building something similar to what you are talking about to give my dog a place to lay while we are driving. He is a ~75lbs. Rottweiller mutt but stretches when he sleeps like he is a 175lbs. Mastiff so the backseat has become quite small for him. Aside from trading in my truck for a Mega Cab, I can't see much else to do, and I don't want a Mega Cab. So, i've thought of doing exactly as you are doing with a piece of plywood. I've been thinking of using 2x4's for the front two "legs" and attaching them to the bottom of the plywood with 90 degree hinges. That way i can lift the front of the plywood up, tuck the legs under, and slide it out of the doorway. I may even attach a couple little strips of Vel-Cro to the bottom of the plywood and the inside of the 2x4 "legs" so that they stay stuck together when folded under, which should make it much easier to remove from the truck by one person.

Once the plywood and 2x4's are cut and mounted, i think i will cut a piece of 2" foam to lay on the top of the plywood, then wrap the whole thing in a grey cloth or pleather, the legs as well. It may not completely match the interior of the truck, but it should be close enough to keep me from turning my nose up at it every time I look at it.

To help keep everything as one piece you could try using a folding table leg hinge for the support and maybe a latching machanism mounted on the factory seat brackets to lock the ply in place to the truck....

Leg hinge

Suitcase latch

Edit..... I see Hound had a similar idea
