Shortbed or Longbed?

I am having trouble making up my mind here, and honestly, I dont care which I get. But I am now within 5 months of buying a truck and I know that I'll get a Mineral Gray Metallic quad cab with the cummins and 6-speed manual tranny. I am going to get a 5.9 4 wheel drive truck and it will be used for commuting (36 miles round trip), and I have a huge parking lot to park in, so I am not worried about parking anywhere.

What I will do with the truck is haul my dirt bikes, tow a mastercraft boat, tow a 10' utility tailer, and maybe a car trailer once a month (MAYBE).

I was always a fan of the longbed. I had a couple shortbeds in the past and really didn't like them. This time I really wanted a big SUV and since Dodge doesn't make one I decided I would get me a loaded Mega which, of course, does not come with a LB. I have done a couple projects where I had to haul a bunch of lumber and honestly the SB has been just fine. If I had the choice of a LB then I would have gotten one but I am super happy with what I got.

Longbeds and 4wd. You can't use either if you don't have them.

Short beds have shorter wheel base so might be better for some offroad situations. This is the primary reason I went the short bed route.

I went from a long bed to a short bed and wish I didn't. I to haul dirt bikes and it is nice to throw 2 of them in the back and still beable to shut the tail gate with all of your gear, and gas cans in the back.

I WISH I would have gotten a long bed(and a 6spd), but its too late now, I have too much time/money/energy in it

By the time you have a toolbox and or other stuff in a truck, a shortbed becomes a no-bed...

I love every day that I got the long bed quad cab with 6 speed. If you want to have a toolbox then a long bed is a MUST!!! Do it, you'll be glad you did.

A big grin comes over my face every time I load an 8' long sheet or board at Lowes and am able to close the tailgate.

LB vs SB

I went from a 2001 long bed to the 2005 short bed I have now and love it. Backing the trailer into tight spots is alot easier and parking it at stores and tight spots is great.

Sounds like personal preference based on these replies. Good luck since you don't care which you get.

Thanks guys.

For those of you with longbeds, do you EVER have problems parking, or do you get used to it?

Its mostly personal preference. I think a quad cab long bed looks to long. But I have owned regular cab long beds. For me I like a regular cab long bed, or if I go crew cab short bed looks better. plus I work in the city so the extra 2 feet can be a problem maneuvering. Just my .02 of course

I don't have a problem parking a LB but then again I guess it's something you get used to. I don't mind walking at the grocery store and prefer to park away from all the idiots who'll wait 5 min for a close up parking space. I'm usually in the store before them anyway and I got the exercise that they more than likely need. (sorry for the sidebar ) Point is that it's easier to park out and walk in.

I find it easier to back into most parking spaces. At least then I have a clear shot out and am less likely to back into someone/thing.

Oh and I agree that the LB QC looks too long. That was one of my primary hangups with the looks of this truck before I bought it. I figured that the first time I'd wish'd I had the long bed or couldn't carry something because of the lack of 2', I was going to kick myself.

I never have any problems parking my truck. I live near Seattle and we have some of the most F'ed up parking and traffic in the country. If I can get around without issue, anyone can.

As far as the LB choice, this is my first LB after 5 SB trucks. I always hated the way LB trucks looked so I never though about buying one.

About a month after having every one of the SBs,I was wishing I'd bought a LB. I finally got my head out of my azz and went with a LB this time. It took some serious debating in my head over the choice, but I'm REALLY glad I went LB. I love it now.

I still see some SBs that look sweet, but for the most part I think they look goofy now.
