Serious Depreciation?

We are all aware of fuel prices.....but does that have a direct connection to the value of our trucks? Stopped by my local Dodge *********** last night to get some rough numbers on my two 2500's I have to sell. The manager said he has never seen truck values dropped so quickly. He said 6 months ago my Mega was worth $34K+ but now maybe $29K. That is tough to swallow, even considering those are what the dealer would pay.

Any advice on what trucks are selling for? I may post my trucks in the classified section today. The two trucks are in my signature, and I was thinking about $36,500 for Mega and $21,900 for Quad Cab.

Wink Heh.. heh.....

They just don't want to give you anything on a trade-in. You can bet they will put your truck back on the lot for a 32-34K sticker!!! ;o) Most of the ones I talked to wanted to low-ball me as well, a few were decent and offering 27-28K. (I have same truck as you) Anyway, good luck selling, Scott

I'm suprised they told you 29K. Whats a new Mega-cab retail at? 46K? You can buy a new one for 11K off the sticker so a new one is what 36K? NOw what if they would trade with a guy every two years for 7K difference? That would be sweet.

I was at the dealership yesterday getting my O2 sensor replaced along with my speakers. They had 2007's for as little as $27,000. It was a 6 spd 2wd dually but still the sticker was $41,000. Like said, they don't want to give you anything on your trade in anyways, but now with the diesel prices so high they know we are hurting and will offer less.

Good point...a new truck every 2 years for $7K...that would be nice. Although personally, I would rather pay $35K for 5.9 Mega with 20,000 miles on it than $35K for a 6.7 New Mega. Just my personal opinion. In any case, there are people that really need trucks and will always drive trucks; they sure could get a smokin deal right now.

Personally, I think he is correct. There are those people out there that have to drive trucks - farmers, contractors, etc. Where the truck sales are dropping is from the "recreational" owners. People who like to drive trucks, but don't necessarily need them. Ford, Dodge, and GM all posted double digit decreases in sales last month. They are dropping production, laying off people and dropping their pants on new trucks to get their current inventory down. When new truck prices go down, so does the value of the newer used trucks (1-3 yrs old).

29k trade in on an 06 MC right now is a deal IMO. I could walk into my dealer and leave with an 08 MC SLT 4x4 for 34-36k guaranteed. It all evens out in the end though. You pay less for the new truck, but get less for the trade. It's all in the trade difference. Someone said it before, but I wouldn't do it. I like my 5.9 too much.

Just felt the effect of this! I just traded in my 2007 4x2 5.9 with 20K miles for a 2007 4x4 5.9 with 5k miles (yeah, long story). Seems taboo to talk real numbers, but I don't care...I got $24K tradein for my truck and got the 'new'(used) truck for $33.9K.

I took a big hit but I really wanted/needed 4x4 and wanted a low mileage 5.9. The one I got is exactly like mine including he color (so no one will know what a stupid move I made) with the exception of 4x4. So I got what I wanted, but also walked out to my new truck bowlegged. I probably could have worked almost the same deal on a brand new 6.7, but I wanted to stick with the 5.9.

To be honest, I checked into about 10 other used vehicles that kindof fit my criteria and none of the other dealers would give me even come close to the 'deal' I got. I can say that most of the 20 or so 2006/2007 trucks I have saved in my autotrader account have not sold in the last 1.5 months that I've been looking. Don't know if that's normal but it doesn't seem so.

So long story short, I would say that even though diesels are proly taking less of a hit than gassers, they are still taking a decent hit.

Out of curiosity, I checked the dealer's web page where I traded in and I see my truck listed but no price as of yet. It's not on autotrader yet either but I bet it will be in a day or so. This should be really interesting to see what they resell it for . If I had to guess, I would say around 30-31K for my tradein.

I'll post it whenever they put a price up...that should give a good indication of the difference.

IMHO, the prices you quoted in the original post might be a little high for a trade-in although I don't know how many miles you have on the mega. I'm sure you've done this, but look on autotrader to get an idea for private party. The last place I tried had a truck exactly like the one I bought offered me $24K for my truck but wanted $36K for theirs. Sorry for the long posts...I'm on travel and I'm bored.

I was in interesting position as well...had an 07' that didnt fot my needs. Sold it to a guy I know for 22.5K. It was a 4x4 1/2 Hemi hard loaded W/ the "
Big ****" pkg. I then turned around and had the dealer show my leased 07' as a trade on an 05' CTD he had and finance the guy who bought mine from me....Heres where it gets tricky.

I never paid taxes on the purchase price of the 07'. Being a leased truck I only paid taxes on the monthly payment of which I had made 11 payments and still owed 25K. When the dealer showed my truck as a trade on the 2005 Cummins that I bought from the dealership for 23.6K I only paid taxes on the trade difference or 1.1K This worked out to be like $80.00 although by all rights I was liable for the sales tax on the entire trade-in value shown on the buyers order which was 22.5K or $1700.00.....Yikes!

So when I went to register the 05' last week I was absolutely certain that I would be looking at 2K to get a tag. Really nice lady at the DMV looked over my stuff and said.....$221.00 Sir!

I didnt tell on myself and paid the $221.00 and walked out with tags in hand.

Now I could have bought a new 2008 for 33K. Thats only 9K more than what I paid for my low mileage(30K) 05'. After reading through this fine forum I determined that I wanted the tried and true 5.9L. I also wanted something that I could beat up and not feel so bad about. Can I go trade my 4x4 QC loaded up 2005 with 30K for a new 2008 QC 4x4 with similiar options for 9K difference today? Heck no it would probably be closer to 13-15K trade difference. Did I get a fair buy on mine at 23.6K? I think so.

Did I screw up by not getting the new truck with the Exhaust brake, 6 speed auto and 6.7????

I dont think so.

5.9L for life! or as long as they are available in good condition...Simple straight foward workingmans diesel truck. Eff all the new fangled complexities and madness.

Check Autotrader to see what they're going for in your area. There are always going to be people who need trucks, so imo, the demand for diesels should increase with the price of fuel compared to gassers, imo.

If someone needs a truck, they'll be more likely to look to the darkside due to the resale value (compared to gasser HD's), power and mileage, if they're smart.
